SolarWinds Platform (previously Orion) nodes

Introduction

For Service Desk Discovery connections, SolarWinds currently supports only local domain accounts; Active Directory accounts are not supported.

SolarWinds Platform products supported are:

  • Network Performance Monitor (NPM)
  • Network Configuration Manager (NCM)
  • Server and Application Monitor (SAM)

A running instance of the Discovery scanner is required and SolarWinds Platform credentials are needed to connect the scanner to the SolarWinds Platform.

Service Desk Discovery Scanner pulls the following from SolarWinds Platform:

SolarWinds strongly recommends that you review Best practices before setting up a connection.

SolarWinds Platform dependency mapping

Currently available only in the Service Desk Premier plan. You can automatically detect and import SolarWinds Platform asset and dependency data into Service Desk.

Dependency mapping allows you to:

  • Align SolarWinds Platform asset and dependency data with IT service management processes.

  • Auto-populate configuration data from SolarWinds Platform into the Service Desk CMDB.

  • Accelerate root cause analysis by attaching SolarWinds Platform configuration and dependency data to incidents and problems.

For network nodes, the dependencies between the nodes are also populated and graphically visualized in Service Desk (relevant for Service Desk Premier package customers only).

Use cases for Dependency Mapping

  • Configuration Management

    • Auto populate the CMDB.
    • Ensure the CMDB is maintained and up-to-date.
  • Change Management

    • Improve change planning by understanding the impact and risks of potential changes.

  • Troubleshooting

    • Quickly analyze and diagnose root causes of SolarWinds Platform issues.
    • Investigate and rapidly resolve SolarWinds Platform issues.
