Introduction

The Service Desk All Network Devices Index page provides a list of devices connected to your network. It can include anything from servers, to switches, to routers, and more.

The information on this page was collected via Discovery (agent and scanner).

Network Devices index page

The Network Devices index page is fully customizable.

If you change the Device Type to computer, the device will be redirected to the Computers index page. Some information may be lost, and the transfer is irreversible.

From the index page you can:

  • View a consolidated list of all scanned network devices.

  • Search for specific devices using the blue looking glass icon.

  • Expand each column to view additional details.

  • Edit the contents of the index page by clicking Edit View in the upper-left corner.

  • See and edit the details of a record by clicking the blue record name hyperlink from the Name column.

  • Delete a single device by hovering over the Actions column (the last column) and selecting the Delete icon.

  • Delete multiple records at once by clicking the checkbox to the left of each device record you wish to delete, and then choosing Delete from the Actions dropdown in the upper right corner.

  • Hide a single device by hovering over the Actions column (the last column) and selecting Hide . To view the details collected through the Agent, you can unhide the device by hovering in the Actions column and clicking Unhide.

To see hidden devices, click Edit View and change the filter to Hidden is Yes, and then click Apply.

Information is no longer pulled through Discovery, and you do not incur any fees on devices that display on the Hidden Devices page.
  • Hide multiple devices at once by clicking the checkbox to the left of each device record you wish to hide, and then choosing Hide from the Actions dropdown in the upper right corner.

  • Change a device type for a specific record:

    1. Locate the record name in the Device Type column.
    2. Click the down arrow next to the record name.
    3. Select the new device type from the dropdown.
  • Change the device type for multiple devices at once by clicking the checkbox to the left of each device record you wish to update, and then choosing Update from the Actions dropdown in the upper-right corner.
  • See the source by which a network device was imported by looking at the Scan Origin field. If you have previously edited your Network Devices index page you need to add the Scan Origin column (Edit View > Columns > Scan Origin > Apply).

Assets on the Network devices index page

Your organization's assets are displayed in the relevant index pages such as:

  • Computers
  • Mobile Devices
  • Network Devices

When you select to display all details of a specific asset, you are provided with a great deal of data pertaining to the specific asset in addition to related information associated with the device. For example:

  • Software
  • Incidents
  • Configuration Items

Network device statuses

Statuses describe the state of the asset. The table below provides definitions for each status.

Status Status definition and when to use the status
Broken Reflects the asset is broken, but still part of your tracked inventory.
Disposed

The asset has been disposed of and you no longer need to track it in inventory.

It is best practice to maintain the asset history intact.

  • SolarWinds DOES NOT recommend deleting any asset.
  • The Disposed status removes the asset from any software license count and maintains accurate compliance reports.
  • By selecting the Disposed asset status, you will free up a SolarWinds asset license to be used on a new asset.
  • SolarWinds recommends that, if possible, you remove the agent from the computer so it no longer reports back.
Duplicate

Identifies the asset as a duplicate still part of your tracked inventory.

Often, assets with the status set to Duplicate are deleted after the duplication is confirmed.

In Repair Used when an asset is in repair and is still part of your tracked inventory.
Lost

Used when an asset is lost and is still part of your tracked inventory.

In most cases, the Lost status is used as a placeholder until the asset has been verified lost, after which the status is changed to Disposed. Some may want to mark the asset as Stolen instead of Disposed to report on all lost and stolen assets together and free up a SolarWinds asset license.

Operational Used when an asset is operational and deployed.
Replacement

When an asset is replaced and is still part of your tracked inventory.

This status can be used instead of Operational in cases where you want to report on replaced assets.

Spare

Used when an asset is a spare and is still part of your tracked inventory.

Often, a pallet of computers will arrive needing to be entered in manually. You can set their status to Spare until you deploy them and change their status to Operational.

Stolen

Used when an asset is stolen and is still part of your tracked inventory.

The Stolen status removes the asset from any software license counts so your compliance reports will be accurate.

The setting also frees up a SolarWinds asset license to be used on a new asset.

See List view for more information.

Troubleshooting: Which index page an item will display on

If you are expecting an item to display on an index page but it is not there, be aware of the following:

  • Devices identified as with a device type as Computer will only display on the Computers index page; they will NOT display on the Network Devices index page.

  • If you are looking for a computer, but it does not display on the Computers index page:

    • Look at the Network Devices index page because the device type might not be set to Computer. If that is the case, you can assign the device as a Computer to permanently reroute it to the Computers index page.

    • Look at the hidden devices on the All Network Devices index page.

After you label a device type as Computer, it is permanently rerouted to the Computers index page. You cannot return the device to the All Network Devices index page. It is important to make sure prior to selecting a new device type that your selection is the right choice for your asset management.
