New features and improvements in Service Desk
Service Catalog Variables
Effective mm dd, yyyy, service catalog variables were migrated to custom fields to increase efficiency when you build and maintain service catalog items. This change makes service catalog variables reusable across all catalog items.
The migration process involved the following changes on the service catalog:
1. Addition of a new Scope attribute for custom fields.
2. Migration and merging of variables.
3. A new flow for adding fields to service catalog items.
4. Changes in available field types.
New Scope attribute for custom fields
Prior to the addition of a new Scope attribute for custom fields, variables were unique to each catalog item. As a result, if you wanted to create a variable called Email and use it in 10 catalog items, you would need create it 10 different times. The situation became even more complicated when you worked with dropdown variables: you had to update the variable in 10 separate places.
To resolve this situation, SolarWinds added a new attribute called Scope to custom fields.
The scope determines the domain to which the custom field relates. It allows reuse of custom fields across multiple catalog items.
The Scope attribute was added as described in the table below.
Scope Name | Description | Where can fields with this scope be used? | Who can create fields using this scope? |
Global | Automatically assigned to all existing custom fields in the database. | Custom forms and catalog items | Administrators only |
Service Catalog | Automatically assigned to all existing variables after they were migrated to custom fields. This scope allows reuse of custom fields across multiple catalog items. | Catalog items only | Administrators and agents |
See Custom fieldsfor more information.
