Documentation forSolarWinds Observability

Add a URI

Monitor a URI endpoint with SolarWinds Observability using the following methods:

  • TCP/IP tests send a string request to your URI and verify the returned response using the Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP). See Monitor a URI over TCP/IP.

  • Ping tests send echo requests to your URI and wait for responses using the Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP). See Monitor a URI with ping tests.

Monitor a URI over TCP/IP

  1. In SolarWinds Observability, click Add Data at the top.

  2. In the Add Data dialog, click URI.

  3. Select TCP/IP tests to send a string request to your URI and verify the returned response using the Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).

  4. Define the URI settings.

    1. Enter the IP address or domain of your URI in the Hostname field.

    2. Enter a Port number in the field provided.

    3. Modify the name of your URI, if desired.

    4. Optional: enter a string to send as part of the TCP/IP request and the string you expect to see in responses for healthy servers.

New line characters are not sent by default with the TCP/IP tests. If a new line character needs to be sent, include it in the string to send.

    5. Click Next.

  5. Define the test details.

The options selected in the Test Definitions page determine how many of your subscription's uptime checks will be used for the URI. The number of Test from locations you select equal the number of uptime checks used to monitor the URI. See Subscription for more information about DEM: Synthetics subscriptions.

    1. Under Test from, select the locations from which to test the website.

      1. Select Regions, Countries, or Cities to specify how granular you want the location choices to be.

For example, if you select Countries, the dropdown menu lists the countries you can test from. Tests are sent from all probe locations in the countries you select.

      2. Select a region, country, or city from the dropdown menu.

Each location is represented as a shaded box.

You can select more locations from the dropdown menu as needed or click the X to remove a location.

    2. Under Test interval, specify how frequently you want the tests to run.

Probes are sent simultaneously from all test locations at the selected interval.

    1. Click Next.

  6. Review the summary of your configuration for accuracy, and then click Add URI.

  7. To view data collected for the newly configured entity in the Entity Explorer, click the name of the URI in the confirmation dialog in the lower-left corner. It may take a few seconds for data to appear for the newly created entity. See Entity Explorer for details.
