Documentation forSolarWinds Observability

Area overviews

Area overviews are non-customizable dashboards, based on a monitoring area. The data in the widgets cover all entities being monitored. You can access area overviews for individual monitoring areas in the left pane of the SolarWinds Observability application.

DEM

The DEM area overview provides widgets summarizing data collected from all monitored websites. To access this data, click DEM in the left pane.

The widgets in the area overview display the following information about all monitored websites:

  • Website Health: A health score, which indicates the overall health and performance of the websites. To view individual monitored websites and their details in the Entity Explorer, click View all websites in the top-right of the widget.

  • Availability Test Success Rate: The success rate of all availability tests executed on the websites.

  • Active Alerts: All alerts relevant for the websites that were triggered but have not been resolved yet. To view all active alerts associated with the monitored websites, click View all alerts.

  • Websites: A color-coded grid view of all monitored websites. A hexagon represents each entity and the color of the hexagon indicates whether the entity's health score is good, moderate, or bad. Hovering over the hexagons displays a pop-up containing the name of the website and its health score. You can sort the view by name or health and ascending or descending order. Click an entity, and then click View Details in the Inspector Panel to access the entity details view.

APM

The APM area overview gathers performance metrics from all services powering your application. The widgets in the area overview display the following information:

  • Services & Transactions: (size by number of requests, color by error rate): Color-coded overview of all monitored services and their transactions, request counts, and error rates.

Databases

The Databases area overview contains two tabs - Overview and Profiler.

Overview

When database instances are monitored, the data for all entities is summarized in widgets in the Databases area overview. To access the area overview, click Databases in the left pane. The widgets in the area overview display the following information:

  • Database Instances: Color-coded overview of all monitored database instances.

  • Concurrency: The total execution time of all queries which finished in a given second on all monitored databases.

  • Throughput: The number of queries that finished executing per second on all monitored databases.

  • Average Latency: The Average Latency widget shows average latency for all database instances over the selected time period. Latency is the amount of time in milliseconds taken per disk I/O operation.

  • Error Rate: The number of errors that occurred in a given second on all monitored databases.

  • Instances tab: Table overview of monitored database instances, providing the instance name, health status and type.

  • Top 10 Queries: tab: The ten most common queries are displayed, showing details of each.

Profiler

To access the Profiler, click Databases and click Profiler. Use the Profiler to rank your queries or query tags by varying metrics such as the top 10 queries by total time and gain insight into the most time consuming and frequently executed queries in your database. See Profiler for more information.

Network

The Network area overview contains two sub items - Devices and Flows.

Devices

The Devices area overview displays data collected from all monitored network devices.

Flows

If you collect NetFlow on your devices, the following metrics can be displayed in the Flows area overview. Metrics are collected from all observed entities, based on the Orion.Netflow.Flows.Bytes metric. See Monitor flow data.

  • Top Endpoints: An area chart of the monitored endpoints that are producing the most traffic on your monitored network.

  • Top Conversations: An area chart displaying most bandwidth-consuming conversations conducted over your monitored network.

  • Top Protocols: A donut chart displaying the protocols used most for traffic on your monitored network.

  • Top Countries: A donut chart displaying the countries hosting endpoints that transmit the most data over your monitored network.

  • Top Applications: An area chart displaying the top applications responsible for monitored traffic on your network, ranked in order of traffic volume.

Flow filters

Starting with Network Collector 2022.4, you can filter flow data to display only communication inside the organization, communication outside of the organization, or all flow data.

How do the filters work?

The Network Collector marks IP addresses within your organization as private. If both addresses in a communication are marked as private, the flow data are displayed when you apply the East/West filter. If one of the IP addresses is not marked as private, the flow data are displayed when you apply the North/South filter.

  • All traffic: All flow data is displayed in the charts.

  • East/West: Only flows from within the organization are displayed.

  • North/South: Only flows regarding communication outside of the organization are displayed.

The filters do not support IPv6 addresses and multicast traffic. While you can see these on the All traffic view, IPv6 addresses and multicast traffic are not displayed on the filtered views.

You can also use time filters in the upper right part of the screen. To use a custom time range, scroll down and select Custom at the bottom of the drop-down list.

Kubernetes

An overview summary of all monitored Kubernetes entities is available with the other area overviews. This summary includes a selection of widgets displaying key performance indicators for the Kubernetes entities.

  • Clusters Health: A health score, which indicates the overall health and performance of all monitored Kubernetes clusters.

  • Health Distribution: An area chart displaying the health distribution for all your Kubernetes clusters.

  • Clusters per Infrastructure Provider: Shows the total count of clusters for each infrastructure provider.
