Getting started with host infrastructure monitoring

The guide for getting started with host infrastructure picks up right after you have accepted an invitation to join your organization in SolarWinds Observability and created your user account. See SolarWinds Observability Getting Started Guide.

SolarWinds Observability can monitor the following types of host infrastructures: self-managed hosts, AWS, Azure, and Kubernetes clusters. See Introduction to host infrastructure.

Verify system compatibility.

Review the SolarWinds Observability System Requirements to ensure your environment is compatible for host infrastructure monitoring. See firewall or access control requirements for self-managed hosts and Kubernetes requirements for Kubernetes clusters.

Verify your firewall settings allow communication with the SolarWinds Observability Agent endpoint for self-hosting. See Endpoint URIs.

Add your host entity to SolarWinds Observability.

  1. In SolarWinds Observability, click Add Data in the upper-right corner.
  2. Click Add Host to install a new SolarWinds Observability Agent, or choose an existing SolarWinds Observability Agent.

  3. If monitoring through a platform such as Azure or AWS, choose the type you want to monitor under Platforms.

  4. Enter the settings and configuration information for your host type.

  5. Copy and execute the provided script(s) on your monitored host or platform as needed.

  6. Verify the information entered on the Summary tab and review your installation or deployment.

See the following host configuration topics for specific instructions for your host type:

Observe monitored host entity.

Information collected for your host entity is available in tiles in the Entity Explorer, area overviews, and custom dashboards.

  • Click Infrastructure in the side navigation to see an overview of your self-managed, AWS, and Azure host entities. Click Kubernetes to see an overview of your Kubernetes entities.

  • Review an individual entity's details in the Entity Explorer.

See Observe entities.

Analyze individual metrics.

Click Analyze in the left-hand navigation and click Metrics to see a list of metrics for all entities in the Metrics Explorer. Use the search field to find metrics for your host entities. Click a metric to see a history of measurements collected for your host entities.

Check out triggered alerts.

  1. On the Home page, click View All Alerts in the Active Alerts widget. This opens the Active Alerts view.
