Accessibility for agents

Introduction

Accessibility standards are issued under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

Visually impaired users often use screen reader software, which is a form of assistive technology that renders text and image content as speech or braille output.

Alternative text for images

In SolarWinds Service Desk, alternative text, or alt text, provides a text alternative of an image for those who are unable to see or interpret it on their own. While alternative text should be added to every image that isn’t decorative, it is visibly hidden to most website users.

Add alt text to images

You can add alternative text to images in SWSD. You can use this feature in most places where a rich text field is available. For example, incidents, solutions, changes, and custom messages in the portal. The process is the same for all object types.

For example, to add an image to an incident:

  1. Create a new incident (or edit an existing one).

  2. Click in the Description field.

  3. Using the rich-text toolbar that pops up in the Description field, click Image.

  4. In the Insert/Edit Image dialog:

    1. Next to the Source field, click Upload and browse to the location where your image is stored.

    2. In the Alternative description text, add the text you want a screen reader to speak.

In addition to using the rich-text field toolbar to format content, you can use it to embed videos, such as Vimeo, YouTube, or Microsoft Stream videos.
