Monitor volumes in the SolarWinds Platform

This topic applies to all SolarWinds Platform products.

When you add nodes for monitoring, the SolarWinds Platform checks for volumes on the nodes. Select the volumes to monitor.

You can configure new warning and critical volume statuses based on usage thresholds. You can view details on volume usage in tooltips.

Volumes can contribute to the node status. Volumes as node status contributors are enabled by default on new installs. On upgrades, you need to enable them as status contributors manually.

Specify volumes for monitoring

View details for volumes

To see monitored volumes on a node:

  1. Go to the node details view, click the Vital Stats subview on the left.

  2. Review the Disk Volumes widget that lists monitored volumes on the node. If you cannot see the widget, there are no volumes monitored on the node.

You can also add the All Volumes widget to your views. On summary views, it lists all volumes relevant for the view. On node details view, it lists all volumes relevant for the node.

  3. Click a volume to go the volume details view. The view displays widgets that help you set thresholds and provide more details for the volume.

Configure volume thresholds

Starting with Orion Platform 2020.2, you can configure independent warning and critical thresholds for Percent Disk Space Used on individual volumes. In previous versions, volume thresholds are configured globally.

Customize thresholds for individual volumes

  1. On the Volume Details view, click Edit Volume in the Management widget.
  2. On Edit volume, select Override Orion General Thresholds, and specify the new thresholds for the volume. Select the threshold and an appropriate operator. You can also use:

When a volume exceeds the configured condition, the volume status changes to Critical or Warning.

Disable thresholds for individual volumes

If you are using fixed size SWAP volumes or source media volumes, you might need to disable thresholds so that these volumes are not flagged with the Critical status or to prevent false positive alerts.

  1. On the Volume Details view, click Edit Volume in the Management widget.
  2. On Edit volume, select Override Orion General Thresholds, and clear the box for Warning and/or Critical threshold.

The cleared threshold will not be used when evaluating the volume status.

Troubleshoot volumes

If volume details, such as volume usage, do not update after the volume was re-sized or renamed, remove the original volume and add the new volume.

When a volume is re-sized or renamed, Windows automatically applies new serial ID to the device. When the serial ID changes, the volume is detected as a new volume.

To re-add the volume:

  1. In the SolarWinds Platform Web Console, go to Settings > Manage Nodes.

  2. Find the node with the volume and expand resources on the node.

  3. Select the volume with issues and delete it.

  4. Select the node and click List Resources.

  5. Review available volumes, select the new volume for monitoring, and click Submit.

The volume details view will show correct data.

You can also set up a network discovery to auto-discover new volumes as they become available in your environment. See Add discovered devices to the SolarWinds Platform.
