SolarWinds Platform features affected by Internet access

Internet access is not a requirement for the SolarWinds Platform, SolarWinds Platform products, or other integrated products. However, some features and functions could be affected or no longer function if Internet access has been blocked to the SolarWinds Platform Server.

Most of the features are still accessible if appropriate policies and access are configured.

If a product is not mentioned in the list, no features were identified that would be impacted by prohibiting Internet access to the SolarWinds Platform Server. Please notify us in the event you find a discrepancy.

In-product upgrades and evaluations

If you are upgrading from 2019.2 or later, use the offline installer to pre-stage files and perform a centralized upgrade. See “Pre-stage installation files in an offline environment” in this topic.

THWACK feeds, widgets, and THWACK Integration

To allow widgets to display THWACK feeds and enable the direct import or export of templates, give the SolarWinds Platform server access to the following URLs:

  • http://thwackfeeds.solarwinds.com
  • http(s)://thwack.api.solarwinds.com

Online licensing

To allow online license registrations to be performed, including synchronizing maintenance renewals and license upgrades, give the SolarWinds Platform server access to the following URLs:

  • https://licenseserver.solarwinds.com
  • https://licensestatusserver.solarwinds.com
  • https://www.solarwinds.com

ServiceNow integration

If you are using ServiceNow alert integration, replace <API-SubDomain> with your configured API URL:

  • https://<API-SubDomain>.service-now.com

Add your own HelpDesk API URLS if you are using the GET/POST to URL or script actions to integrate your alerts.

Customer Portal

Help and documentation access from products

To access help from within the product, give the SolarWinds Platform server access to the following URL:

  • https://www.documentation.solarwinds.com

Alternatively, you can download offline (local) help files and configure the SolarWinds Platform server to open those help files. See Offline help files for Orion Platform products for downloads and instructions. If the product and version you need is not listed, request it though Support.

Dynamic backgrounds in Network Atlas

Geo-lookups in the Worldwide Map widget

To allow Worldwide Map generation and Geo-lookups from SNMP, give the SolarWinds Platform server access to the following URLs:

  • http://open.mapquestapi.com/
  • https://api.openstreetmap.org/
 

Network Performance Monitor (NPM)

MIBs database (powers other features like UnDP)

If Internet access is disabled, the MIB database can be manually downloaded from the Customer Portal, copied, and updated on the SolarWinds Platform Server.

Meraki Dashboard Integration

Provides wireless access point information for Meraki wireless devices via API. To enable this feature, give the SolarWinds Platform server access to the following URL:

  • dashboard.meraki.com

Device Studio

Give the Orion server access to the THWACK Content Exchange URLs listed above.

NetPath features:

  • Availability of any endpoint (whole path) outside of the internal network is unavailable
  • BGP info, AS info, latency, packet loss etc.

Give the SolarWinds Platform server access to the following URLs, which are used to perform BGP data lookups:

  • https://stat.ripe.net
  • http://whois.arin.net/ui/

Azure virtual network gateways visibility

To monitor Azure V-Nets, V-Net Gateways, and Site-to-Site Connections and metrics, give the SolarWinds Platform server access to the following URL:

  • https://portal.azure.com
 

Network Configuration Manager (NCM)

End of Life/ End of Support

No impact. EoL/EoS information is updated every release, and users cannot update this information manually.

Firmware vulnerabilities

The feature will work but NCM cannot automatically download the latest firmware vulnerability data. Users can manually update this data. See Manually download and add firmware vulnerability files.

Access to THWACK Content Exchange to import and export:

  • Compliance policy reports
  • Config change templates
  • Device templates
  • Firmware upgrade templates

You can copy files manually from THWACK using a pen drive or another storage device.

NCM Connector for Cisco SmartAdvisor

This tool is not shipped with NCM, but it can be downloaded from the SolarWinds site. To function, this tool needs access to NCM, devices, and the Cisco portal. Give the Orion server access to the following URL:

Server & Application Monitor (SAM), Virtualization Manager (VMAN), and Server Configuration Monitor (SCM)

Web Performance Monitor (WPM)

WPM players impact

If Internet access is disabled for SolarWinds Platform, but synthetic monitoring is still needed for external sites, a WPM player will need to have access allowed to the specific targeted sites.

For optimal performance of the WPM browser in an offline state, Certificate Revocation (CRL) checks should be switched to offline.

 

Database Performance Analyzer (DPA)
