Monitor Fortinet switches
Track performance, availability, and configuration metrics for your Fortinet switches using SNMP.
-
Gain enhanced visibility into performance metrics. Monitor port utilization, CPU, memory, and interface metrics to ensure proactive troubleshooting.
-
Monitor hardware health. Track hardware health metrics, including temperature, fan speed, and power supply metrics.
-
Gain insight into topology. Monitor VLAN membership, trunking, and MAC table metrics.
To get accurate Fortinet-specific information, add the device for monitoring as a node using SNMP as the polling method. Review the node details view or view your switches on topology maps.
Supported devices
Switch monitoring is designed to support switch models with similar MIB implementations and compatible firmware versions. Switch monitoring was validated on the following devices using multiple firmware versions, primarily on firmware v7.2.8.
-
FortiSwitch-248E-FPOE
-
FortiSwitch-448E-POE
-
FortiSwitch-1048E
Monitoring capabilities are designed to support other FortiSwitch E-series models and FortiSwitch D-series models that implement similar MIB structures, such as FortiSwitch-224E-POE, FortiSwitch-424E-FPOE, or FortiSwitch-1024D. Verify that your devices support SNMP monitoring with the same MIBs.
Limitations
The following metrics are not available because Fortinet switches do not expose the required SNMP OIDs:
-
Link Aggregation (LAG) Status: Metrics related to load balancing and member link status
-
Spanning Tree Protocol (STP): Port roles, topology changes, and root bridge details
-
Quality of Service (QoS): Traffic prioritization, queue depths, and buffer management
-
Layer 3 routing information, such as OSPF, BGP, and unicast/multicast routing metrics
Supported metrics
Performance metrics
-
Port Utilization - bandwidth usage, packet statistics, and errors.
-
CPU utilization - based on FortiSwitch-specific OIDs
-
Memory utilization - total, used, and free memory
-
Interface errors and discards - CRC errors, frame errors, and packet discards
Availability and reliability metrics
-
Switch uptime - uptime and reboot history
-
Environment monitoring - temperature, fan speed, and power supply status
Network topology and configuration
-
VLAN configuration - VLAN membership and trunk status
Layer 2 and 3 metrics
-
MAC address table utilization - MAC address entries and usage
-
ARP table utilization - IP-to-MAC mapping entries
Hardware health metrics
-
Hardware health monitors temperature, fan, and power health using standard MIBs.
