Create a scheduled task to archive log files in KSS NG

To save disk space, you can create a task to automatically archive log files that are no longer needed for troubleshooting (for example, log files that are more than a week old) in Kiwi Syslog Server NG (KSS NG). The archive task includes options to move files to another location, compress them, encrypt them, and send notifications. You can schedule the task to run at regular intervals.

You can also create a scheduled task to remove archived files after the retention period is over. For an example, see Create scheduled tasks to automate log file archival and retention.

  1. From the KSS NG navigation bar, choose Setup > Schedules to view the Schedules setup window.
  2. Click Add scheduled task to start the Create Schedule wizard. Toggle the Enabled option if you want to enable the schedule after it is created.

  3. Define the task name in the provided field. Select the Archive option and click Next.

  4. Set the schedule frequency. Determine whether you want the schedule to run within specified minutes, hours, days, months, or years. Click the relevant tab and select an option from the tab list.
  5. If needed, set the schedule exceptions.
    1. Scroll to the bottom of the Create Schedule window and click Add New on the left.
    2. Determine whether you want the exception to apply to specified minutes, hours, days, months, or years. Click the relevant tab and select an option from the tab list.
  6. Once you have specified your schedule and added any exceptions, click Next.
  7. Define the source location of your log files that you want to archive. The default file location where logs are stored is C:\ProgramData\SolarWinds\KiwiSyslogService\logs.
  8. Check the Include subfolders box if you want to include all subfolders in the source location.

  9. Under source files, specify the file mask and criteria for file size and file age. Click Next.
  10. The default file mask value is *.*. The default value for both file size and file age is Any.

  11. Define the destination location, and browse to select the folder you created to store archived files. An example of a recommended destination location you can create is C:\Program Files (x86)\SolarWinds\Kiwi Syslog Server NG\Archive.
  12. Select an option to move or copy files from the source location to the destination location. Click Next.
  13. Check the option to zip files after moving or deleting if you want to compress archived files.
  14. If you want to compress archived files, choose one of the following options from the drop-down menu:

    • Fastest — Requires the least amount of time to compress the data, but the files are larger.
    • Optimal — Provides the best balance between the time required to compress the data and file size ratio.
    • Smallest size — Creates smaller files but requires a significantly longer compression time. This option is recommended only when space is limited and processing time is not a priority.

If you do not want to compress archived files, leave the box unchecked and select No Compression.

  15. Click Create to create the schedule.
