Legacy Kiwi Syslog Server Getting Started Guide

Welcome to the SolarWinds legacy Kiwi Syslog Server (KSS) Getting Started Guide.

The purpose of this guide is to help you configure legacy KSS to receive syslog messages and SNMP traps from network devices, such as routers, switches, and firewalls, and to familiarize yourself with the most commonly used features of legacy KSS.

This getting started guide assumes that you have purchased or are evaluating legacy KSS, and that you have installed legacy KSS.

Checklist to get started with legacy KSS

Install legacy KSS

If you have not installed legacy KSS, see the legacy KSS installation guide for system requirements, planning checklists, troubleshooting and installation instructions.

Configure devices to send messages to legacy KSS

Syslog-capable devices must be configured to send syslog messages to legacy KSS, as shown in this example of configuring a Cisco switch. If legacy KSS is not receiving messages, you can troubleshoot legacy KSS.

Create rules

Rules specify the actions legacy KSS takes when it receives a message that meets the specified criteria. For example, you can have legacy KSS send an email, forward the message, log the message to a file, or run a script.

Create schedules

Ensure regulatory compliance by creating schedules to automate the process of log archival and retention.
