Set up multifactor authentication for your Serv-U user account

Serv-U can be configured to allow or to require multifactor authentication (MFA). If MFA is available, you are prompted to set it up.

You can log in to a mobile device with MFA after it has been set up. However, you cannot set it up on a mobile device.

MFA is available only for domain users. It is not supported for database, Windows, or LDAP users.

Set up MFA

The first time you log in to Serv-U after MFA becomes available, a prompt similar to the following is displayed.

  • If logging in with MFA is enabled but optional, you can choose to click Skip and continue without setting up MFA.

  • If logging in with MFA is required, the Skip button is not available. You must set up and log in with MFA to continue.

To set up MFA:

  1. Install an authenticator app on your smart phone or other mobile device.

You can use any authenticator app that supports time-based one-time passwords (TOTP), including Google Authenticator, LastPass Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator, and Twilio Authy.

  2. In the authenticator app, add an account to use for Serv-U logins, and scan the QR code on the dialog.

  3. In Serv-U, click Next.

You are prompted to enter the six-digit code sent by your authenticator app.

  4. Enter the code and click Next to log in.

Reset MFA

You can reset MFA for your account if you need to. For example, you might need to reset MFA because you are getting a different smart phone.

  1. Log in to Serv-U.

If you are required to log in with MFA and you cannot (for example, you no longer have access to the mobile device where the authenticator app is installed), you can request that an administrator reset MFA for your user account.

  2. Click the drop-down menu in the upper-right corner under your user name. Then click Reset MFA.

The Reset Multifactor Authentication dialog opens.

  3. If necessary, install an authenticator app on your smart phone or other mobile device.

  4. In the authenticator app, add an account to use for Serv-U logins, and scan the QR code on the dialog.

  5. In Serv-U, click Next.

You are prompted to enter the password for your Serv-U account and the six-digit code sent by your authenticator app.

  6. Enter your password and the code, and then click Next to log in.
