Documentation forEngineer's Toolset

System requirements for Engineer's Toolset for the Web 2022.4

Release date: November 22, 2022

SolarWinds strongly recommends that you install the SolarWinds Platform on a server that is neither public, nor internet-facing. To learn about best practices for configuring your SolarWinds Platform installation securely, see Secure Configuration for the SolarWinds Platform.

The following sections list the minimum system requirements and recommendations for your base SolarWinds Platform server.

Installing multiple SolarWinds Platform products on the same computer may change the requirements. For details on multi-module requirements, see the Multi-module system guidelines.

Hardware requirements

SolarWinds strongly suggests using the recommended hardware configuration to avoid potential performance issues caused by a heavy load or custom configurations such as increased data retention or more frequent polling intervals.

The minimum hardware configuration is sufficient if you are evaluating the product or do not anticipate heavy usage.

Hardware Requirements

CPU speed

Quad core, 2.5 GHz or better

Do not enable Physical Address Extension (PAE) if running on an x86 processor.

Hard drive space

10 GB minimum

20 GB recommended

Some common files may need to be installed on the same drive as your server's operating system.

Memory

4 GB minimum

8 GB recommended

Software requirements

The following table lists software requirements and recommendations for an Engineer's Toolset for the Web installation.

  • SolarWinds does not support installing Engineer's Toolset for the Web on domain controllers.
  • SolarWinds neither recommends nor supports the installation of any SolarWinds Platform product on the same server, or using the same database server, as a Research in Motion (RIM) Blackberry server.
Software Requirements

Operating system

Production Evaluation Only
  • Windows Server 2019
  • Windows Server 2016
  • Windows Server 2012 R2
  • Windows 10
  • Windows 8.1 (except for Standard Edition)

Operating system languages

  • English
  • German
  • Japanese
  • Simplified Chinese

IP address version

IPv4

IPv6 implemented as a dual stack. For more information, see RFC 4213 - Basic Transition Mechanisms for IPv6 Hosts and Routers.

CIDR notation is not supported for IPv6 addresses.

Web server

Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS), version 7.5 or later

  • DNS specifications require that host names be composed of alphanumeric characters (A-Z, 0-9), the minus sign (-), and periods (.). Underscore characters (_) are not allowed. For more information, see RFC 952 - DOD Internet Host Table Specification.
  • If it's not already installed, IIS is installed by the SolarWinds installer. You can install IIS manually before installing your SolarWinds product to reduce installation time or save network bandwidth.
  • SolarWinds products are not compatible with IIS version 6.0 installations that use web gardens.

.NET Framework

.NET 4.8

Web console browser

  • Microsoft Edge
  • Firefox 49.0 or later (Toolset Integration is not supported on Firefox)
  • Chrome 54.0 or later
  • Safari for iPhone

In ETS for the Web 2020.2 and later, some pages are not compatible with IE11. If you are using IE11, you will see a warning message on incompatible pages. SolarWinds recommends using a different browser (such as Chrome, Firefox, or Microsoft Edge) for the best user experience with ETS for the Web.

Other

MSMQ, RabbitMQ

User privileges

SolarWinds recommends that administrators have local administrator privileges to ensure full functionality of local SolarWinds tools. Accounts limited to the SolarWinds Platform Web Console do not require administrator privileges.

SolarWinds SQL database requirements

For best performance, you should install your SolarWinds SQL database on a server that is separate from where you are installing Engineer's Toolset for the Web and any other SolarWinds Platform products that you have.

Requirements

SQL Server

SQL Server 2019

SQL Server 2017

SQL Server 2016 SP1

Azure SQL Database - see here for detailed Azure SQL Database requirements.

See SolarWinds Platform database requirements for more detailed database requirements.

  • Due to latency effects, SolarWinds does not recommend installing your SQL Server and SolarWinds Platform server in different locations across a WAN.
  • Either mixed-mode or SQL authentication must be supported.
  • If you are managing your SolarWinds SQL database, SolarWinds recommends you install SQL Server Management Studio.
  • You can set the database recovery model to Full recovery mode only if you use Always On Availability. We strongly recommend using Simple recovery mode to ensure the best performance.

CPU

Quad core processor

Hard drive space

20 GB minimum

40 GB recommended

Per Windows standards, some common files may need to be installed on the same drive as your server operating system.

Memory

4 GB minimum

8 GB recommended

Additional memory improves both performance and reliability.

Authentication

Either mixed-mode or SQL authentication

Other software

If you are managing your SolarWinds SQL database, SolarWinds recommends you install SQL Server Management Studio.

The Installation Wizard installs the following required x86 components if they are not found on your SolarWinds SQL database server:

  • SQL Server System Common Language Runtime (CLR) Types - SolarWinds Platform products use secure SQL CLR stored procedures for selected, non-business data operations to improve overall performance.
  • Microsoft SQL Server Native Client
  • Microsoft SQL Server Management Objects

Port Requirements

SolarWinds does not recommend the use of HTTP (Port 80). Please use HTTPS (Port 443) to ensure that any web-related connections are secure.

Review and open the needed ports for the SolarWinds Platform and Engineer's Toolset for the Web.
