Documentation forSolarWinds Platform Self-Hosted

Supported vendors and devices

SolarWinds Observability Self-Hosted is designed to give you visibility across your entire environment—network, infrastructure, applications, and cloud. This centralized page helps you understand the breadth of support and guides you to detailed resources for each technology.

SolarWinds does not provide a comprehensive list of all supported devices. If your device supports standard SNMP MIB2, it can be monitored with the SolarWinds Platform. However, if your device model is not identified accurately, review the Tell Us Your Unknown Devices discussion on THWACK, our IT community, to find out how to submit the device SysObjectIDs to the SolarWinds Platform database and have the device identified correctly.

How SolarWinds collects data

SolarWinds uses multiple collection technologies to gather metrics and status information. See Choose the polling method to use in the SolarWinds Platform.

SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol)

Standard protocol for monitoring network devices such as routers, switches, and firewalls.

WMI and WinRM (Windows servers only)

Provides similar monitoring and management data to what is available via SNMP-based polling with the addition of Windows-specific communications and security features. See Windows Servers: WMI/WinRM and ICMP.

API integration

Collects data from cloud services and modern network platforms that expose REST APIs.

CLI polling

Uses command-line access for advanced metrics on devices like Cisco ASA firewalls.

Agent-based monitoring

Installs lightweight agents on servers and applications for deep performance insights. See Poll devices with SolarWinds Platform Agents.

Agentless monitoring

Uses WMI, ICMP, and other protocols for systems where installing an agent isn’t possible.

Database SQL calls

Primarily used for server and application management, such as AppInsight for SQL, SQL Query monitors, or ODBC component monitors. See SAM documentation.

Additional integrations

Integrating the following SolarWinds products allows you to see related data in the web console.

Supported devices and vendors

SolarWinds supports a wide range of devices out of the box, including:

Network devices

Cisco, Juniper, Arista, Extreme Networks, Fortinet, Ruckus Wireless, Meraki, and other SNMP-enabled hardware. See Network infrastructure support by vendor for details.

Applications and servers

Commercial and custom applications with transaction tracing and code profiling. Monitor performance of servers and applications

Databases

MySQL, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Redis, Amazon Aurora, and Azure SQL. See View DPA data in the SolarWinds Platform.

Virtualization

Supported virtualization entities include:

  • ESXi and ESX Server version 4.1 or later
  • VMware vSphere version 4.1 or later
  • Microsoft Hyper-V Server versions 2008 R2, 2012, 2012 R2
  • Nutanix
  • Proxmox Virtual Environment

See Monitor virtual infrastructure.

Cloud and hybrid environments

SaaS-based monitoring for multi-cloud and hybrid setups, plus integration with SolarWinds Self-Hosted.

Supported vendors:

  • Amazon Web Services (AWS)
  • Microsoft Azure
  • Google Cloud Platform (GCP)

See Monitor cloud instances and VMs and Monitor cloud-based instances and VMs in SAM.

Expand support through customization

If your device isn’t supported out of the box, you can extend monitoring capabilities by:

Custom SNMP pollers

Define custom OIDs to collect additional metrics. See Create custom monitors in the SolarWinds Platform.

API integrations

Use REST APIs to pull data from third-party services.

Scripts and CLI commands

Add custom scripts for advanced device metrics.

Community templates

Import templates from the SolarWinds community or create your own.
