UDT 2022.4 System Requirements

Release date: November 22, 2022

SolarWinds strongly recommends that you install the SolarWinds Platform on a server that is neither public, nor internet-facing. To learn about best practices for configuring your SolarWinds Platform installation securely, see Secure Configuration for the SolarWinds Platform.

Important: These system requirements define the minimum requirements for User Device Tracker 2022.4 as a single product installed on SolarWinds Platform 2022.4. Requirements may increase for medium or large environments, or environments with multi-modules installed.

For additional information about requirements and configurations, see the Multi-module system guidelines. You should also review your product administration guides and release notes for the exact product requirements beyond these minimums.

You cannot install SolarWinds Platform products on the same server as SolarWinds Access Rights Manager (ARM).

Operating System

Production or Evaluation

Evaluation Only
  • Windows Server 2012 R2
  • Windows Server 2016
  • Windows Server 2019

Microsoft IIS, version 8.0 or later.

DNS specifications require that hostnames be composed of alphanumeric characters (A-Z, 0-9), the minus sign (-), and periods (.). Underscore characters (_) are not allowed. For more information, see RFC 952.

SolarWinds neither recommends nor supports the installation of any SolarWinds UDT product on the same server or using the same database server as a Research in Motion (RIM) Blackberry server.

.NET Framework

Version 4.8 .NET Framework. This will be downloaded automatically if not found when the installer is run.

Run the same version of .NET on your primary server and any Additional Polling Engines or Additional Web Servers in the environment.

.NET 4.8 support was introduced in Orion Platform 2019.2 Hotfix 1.

Hardware requirements

The following table lists minimum hardware requirements and recommendations for your UDT server.

Hardware requirements are listed by SolarWinds license level.

Hardware

UT2500, UT5000, or UT10000

UT25000 or UT50000

UTX

CPU Speed

4-core CPU, 2.5 GHz or better

Hard Drive Space

2 x 146 GB 15k (RAID1)

A RAID 1 drive for server operating system, SolarWinds installation, and tempdb files is recommended. The SolarWinds installer needs 1GB on the drive where temporary Windows system or user variables are stored. Per Windows standards, some common files may need to be installed on the same drive as your server operating system.

Memory

16 GB

SolarWinds Platform SQL database requirements

The following table lists software and hardware requirements for your SolarWinds Platform database server. SolarWinds UDT license levels are provided as a reference.

Requirements

UT2500, UT5000, or UT10000

UT25000 or UT50000

UTX

SQL Server

SQL Server 2016, SP1, SP2

SQL Server 2017

SQL Server 2019

Recommendations

  • Use 64-bit version of SQL Server.
  • Use the Simple database recovery mode to ensure best performance.
  • You can set the database recovery model to Full Recovery if your SolarWinds Platform database is hosted on a SQL Cluster or if you use Always On Availability. However, you must back up your database regularly and ensure that volume you store your transaction log has free space that is at least equal to or greater than the size of your Orion database. Your transaction logs will continue to grow indefinitely until a database backup is performed and the transactions committed to the database. We recommend daily database backups when you use the Full Recovery model.
  • If you are managing your SolarWinds UDT database, SolarWinds recommends you install the SQL Server Management Studio component.
  • If your SolarWinds UDT product installs SQL Server System CLR Types, a manual restart of the SQL Server service for your SolarWinds UDT database is required.
  • Use the following database select statement to check your SQL Server version, service pack or release level, and edition:

select SERVERPROPERTY ('productversion'), SERVERPROPERTY ('productlevel'), SERVERPROPERTY ('edition')

  • If using SQL server Express in a production environment with SolarWinds UDT, see the following recommendations:
    • Avoid using a license tier higher than UT240 or UT1000.
    • Track a maximum of 100 devices/users per port.
    • Use default polling settings.

CPU Speed

8-core CPU 3 GHz or better.

Hard Drive Space

200 GB 15k (RAID 1+0)

Due to intense I/O requirements, a RAID 1+0 drive is strongly recommended the SQL Server database and SolarWinds UDT data and log files. RAID 5 is not recommended for the SQL Server hard drive. The SolarWinds UDT installer needs at least 1GB on the drive where temporary Windows system or user variables are stored. Per Windows standards, some common files may need to be installed on drive as your server operating system.

Memory

16 GB

The Configuration wizard installs the following required x86 components if they are not found on your SolarWinds UDT database server:

  • SQL Server System Common Language Runtime (CLR) Types. SolarWinds products use secure SQL CLR stored procedures for selected, non-business data operations to improve overall performance.
  • Microsoft SQL Server Native Client
  • Microsoft SQL Server Management Objects

Additional requirements

Enterprise-level SolarWinds UDT deployments with the potential for more than 50,000 ports may need additional computing resources above the standards required for SolarWinds common components:

Ports

Additional Requirements

Up to 50,000

No additional requirements

More than 50,000

8+ GB RAM

Scalability

By adding individual polling engines, you can transparently scale your SolarWinds UDT installation to any environment.

For more information see Scalability Engine Guidelines.
