Documentation forSolarWinds Observability SaaS

Software area overview

Use the Software area overview under Infrastructure to add and monitor software application and application components in SolarWinds Observability SaaS that are hosted on servers and or network devices in SolarWinds Observability Self-Hosted. See Software monitoring for instructions on adding servers and other host devices using either Platform Connect or Network Collector.

Additionally, the applications and components must have monitor templates assigned to them. For more information about assigning application and application component monitors via SolarWinds Observability Self-Hosted Web Console, see Discover applications in your SAM environment and Use SAM application monitor templates and application monitors.

The following summary includes a selection of widgets displaying key metric data for the software entities:

Overall Health

A donut graph showing the number of applications and application components currently distributed among each of the health score categories. An individual entity's current health score is displayed as a number out of 100, with the background of the current health colored based on whether the health is Good, Moderate, Bad, or NULL. The combined results for all monitored entities displayed in the graph are in real time.

Active Alerts

The widget shows an overview of the active alerts triggered by application or application components, categorized by severity. Active alerts are alerts that have been triggered but not cleared. This includes acknowledged alerts.

For more information about the entity's active alerts, click the widget title or click the vertical ellipsis () in the upper-right corner of the widget and click View All Active Alerts.

View summarized information about monitored software applications and components

Use the table below the health widgets to sort, filter, and view a summary of the current status of the applications and application components that are currently being monitored. Included in the list for each are:

  • The individual health score

  • Name of the entity

  • Host

  • Associated components grouped by their health score category

  • Monitoring status indicator

    • An encircled checkmark is displayed when application monitoring is in progress. if the application is currently being monitored

    • Pause symbol (two vertical lines) is displayed when application monitoring is currently paused. if the application monitoring has been paused

  • Last Seen time stamp and estimated relative time

Use the vertical ellipsis next to the Last Seen values to complete actions specific to each monitor:

  • Edit: Make changes to the name of the application monitor

  • Add to Group: Select an existing or create a new group to add the application monitor

  • Pause Monitoring: Confirm pause of the application monitor

Click a row to open the Inspector Panel and see related component details for each monitored application. Shown are all the application components together with their Health Score, Host information, and Tags. The Inspector Panel also displays a banner when monitoring is paused for given application.

From the Software Overview table, you can explore more Application Details by clicking the name of the application monitor, or click the Host name to see more details related to the host server or network device.

From the Inspector Panel, click the View Details button to reach the Application Details view, or click the name of the component for a deeper dive into Application Component Details.

Search for applications

Use the Search box to search for a specific application or application component or to filter the list based on the application name or host. You can also sort by or group by any field in the list. When you perform a search, the Overview tab displays information about only the applications or components returned by that search.

  1. Click inside the Search box.

The Attributes drop-down menu displays the attributes available for applications or components.

  2. Enter the search criteria:

To search based on a specific attribute value
    1. Click the attribute name.

The Tag Values drop-down menu displays all values for the selected attribute that are assigned to currently displayed entities.

    2. Click a value. The attribute and value are shown in key:value format. For example:

      healthScore.categoryV2:bad

To search based on multiple attribute values
    1. Click the attribute name.

The Tag Values drop-down menu displays all values for the selected attribute that are assigned to currently displayed applications.

    2. Enter the values to include, enclosed in square brackets and separated by commas. For example, to search for applications whose health scores are either bad or unknown:

      healthScore.categoryV2:[bad, unknown]

Multiple values for an attribute are separated by an implicit OR operator. The search will return applications with any of the specified values.

To search based on the name

Enter a string. If the string includes spaces or special characters, enclose it in quotation marks. Examples:

    exampleApplication
    "example component"

The search will return all applications whose name includes the string.

The search is not case sensitive.

  3. If needed, add other conditions.

By default, multiple conditions are separated by the AND operator. Applications must match all conditions. For example, to search for applications with a bad health score whose names include the string prod:

    healthScore.categoryV2:bad prod

To search for applications that meet any condition, include the OR operator. For example, to search for all applications that have a bad health score or have prod in the name:

    healthScore.categoryV2:bad OR prod

You can use parentheses to group conditions. For example, to search for all applications that have a bad health score and are in maintenance, and all applications with prod in the name:

    (healthScore.categoryV2:bad inMaintenance:true) OR prod

  4. Press Enter to search.

The Software area overview shows information about only applications returned by the search.

Save a search

If you regularly run the same search, you can save it to run it again quickly.

  1. Enter the search conditions you want to save.

  2. Click the ribbon icon on the right side of the Search box.

The Create Saved Search dialog opens.

  3. Enter a name to identify the search.

  4. If you want the saved search to be available only to you, select Private.

  5. Click Save.

Run a saved search

  1. Click the list icon on the right side of the Search box.

The drop-down menu lists the saved searches for applications or application components that you have access to.

  2. Click the name of the search you want to run.

The Search box shows the search criteria, and the search runs.

Clear search conditions

To remove all conditions, click the X on the right side of the Search box. Or, if the search did not return any results, click Clear All Filters.
