Control who can import via CSV
On this page
Introduction
Some customers want to control who can add/create from an index page. For example, you might want some, but not all, Service Agent Users to have permission to add/create a specific object type (problems) or asset (computers). You can do that through permissions and restrictions.
Process overview
The process requires multiple steps. For this example, SolarWinds provides step-by-step instructions for preventing a Service Agent User from adding/creating computers both manually and via CSV import. You can modify the selections you make during the process for other situations.
In Step 1 you clone the existing role. Cloning the role allows you to later decide who should have the ability to add/create vs those who should be restricted from doing so.
In Step 2 you add a restriction to the cloned role. The restriction:
- Prevents the cloned role from seeing the CSV - Import and Update option in the Actions dropdown, thereby removing the ability to import or update assets via CSV.
- Prevents the cloned role from adding/creating manually.
- Does not prevent the cloned the role from being able to read or edit if those permissions were previously allowed in the role you cloned from. If you also want a restriction for editing, you can add one to the cloned role.
In Step 3 you assign the role to the appropriate users. For example, you might have some users with the original role who should still be able to import, and others who should not. The role with the restriction could then be applied to only those who should not be allowed to import.
Step-by-step instructions
Additional information on permissions and restrictions is available in Roles and Permissions.
Step 1: Clone role
If you want some Service Agent Users to be allowed to import objects and others not, SolarWinds recommends that you clone the existing Service Agent User role. Keep in mind that the newly cloned role will keep all of the permissions and restrictions configured in the original role.
-
Navigate to Setup > Account > Roles & Permissons.
-
Locate the role you want to prevent from creating/importing computers.
-
To the right of the role name, click Clone Role.
-
Provide a new name for the cloned role, for example,
Service Agent User - restrict computer creation
, and then click Create Role.
Step 2: Add restriction
-
Navigate to Setup > Account > Roles & Permissons.
-
Locate the newly cloned role.
-
Hover your mouse to right of any existing permission and click Add Restriction.
-
In the pop-up:
- Under Action select Create.
- Under Subject, select Computers.
- Click Create Restriction.
- Remove any permissions and restrictions you do not want assigned to the newly cloned role.
Step 3: Assign new role to specific users
An administrator or someone with the ability to edit user accounts can perform a mass update or change a single user's role.
To perform a mass update
-
Navigate to Setup > Users & Groups > Users.
-
In the upper right, click the Actions drop down and select Update.
-
Place a check mark next to each user account you for which you want to change the role.
To update users one at a time
-
Navigate to Setup > Users & Groups > Users.
-
From the Users index table, click the user's name.
-
One the details page, click Actions > Edit User.
-
Under Role, use the dropdown menu to select the newly created role, and then click Update User at the bottom of the page.
