Monitor Dell PowerMax (Onboard Provider) arrays in SRM

Dell PowerMax (Onboard Provider) 2000/8000 and 2500/8500 arrays are block devices monitored through a RESTful onboard API.

For information on enabling the array, see the Enable a Dell PowerMax (Onboard Provider) array knowledge base article.

After the array is enabled, you can begin monitoring as described in Add your storage array for monitoring with SRM.

Hardware Health Monitoring is not available on these arrays.

Supported versions and models

The minimum supported firmware for Dell PowerMax is 10.3 (103).

Supported models are as follows:

  • V3 generation devices - PowerMax 2000/8000

  • V4 generation devices - PowerMax 2500/8500

VMAX is not supported.

Notes

Be sure to review the following information, as REST API specification alone does not provide all the data necessary to display in SRM.

Discovery

Provider arrays with firmware versions lower than 10.3 will not be discovered.

Disks

The total number of disks is the sum of the general number of disks, spare disks, and unconfigured disks.

Due to PowerMax storage architecture, SRM cannot access raw capacity numbers. PowerMax raw capacity is always represented as the sum of all drive capacities in the system, with 100% used and 0% spare.

Array status

Array status is calculated based on health score:

  • ≥ 95 — Good

  • ≥ 74 — Fair

  • < 74 — Poor

If the health score from the Unisphere dashboard for a specific array has no data, it is often due to missing performance data. The SRM data model displays missing data as unknown.

Solution: Check the Performance section.

Pools

In SRM, the Dell PowerMax Storage Resource Pool (SRP) is displayed as the parent pool, and Storage Groups (SRG) are displayed as its children.

Performance

The arrays should be configured to gather metrics for Storage Groups prior to polling the performance metrics for LUNs. For additional information on how to get device-level metrics, see this Dell support article.

Topology

Topology supports iSCSI and fibre connections.

Hardware Health monitoring

Hardware Health monitoring is not supported.

Controllers monitoring

Controller polling is not supported.
