New features and improvements in SEM

Deployment on Nutanix

SolarWinds Security Event Manager (SEM) can be deployed on the Nutanix hypervisor, providing enhanced deployment flexibility. This feature is compatible with Nutanix AHV installation, configuration, and performance. For more information, see Deploy SEM on Nutanix.

MFA support

The addition of support for OpenID Connect (OIDC) and Security Assertion Markup Language (SAML) allows for a way to add multi-factor authentication (MFA) into the authentication process. Commonly used for Single Sign-On (SSO) solutions, it allows for users to log in once and access multiple applications and systems. For more information, see Enable SAML for MFA.

Google Cloud support

The SEM appliance can be hosted in Google Cloud. For more information, see Deploy SEM on Google Cloud Platform (GCP).

Other improvements

  • Licenses can be distributed across multiple SEM instances with multi-activation licensing, as shown in License your SEM deployment.
  • Added the option of having the Windows event log in Snare syslog raw format, as shown in Enable log forwarding.
  • Implemented upgrades for improved security.

Installation or upgrade

Last updated: April 22, 2025

For new installations, you can download the installation file from the product page on https://www.solarwinds.com or from the Customer Portal. For more information, see the SEM Installation and Upgrade Guide.

To prevent access by unauthorized users, SolarWinds recommends setting up your SEM appliance with no access to the Internet or any public-facing network. For additional security recommendations, see Secure your SEM deployment > Review the SEM security checklists located in the SEM Administrator Guide.

For upgrades, see Upgrade SEM in the SEM Administrator Guide to determine the upgrade path, review best practices for SEM upgrades, and upgrade the SEM components.

Known issues

No macOS agent

Currently, there is no macOS agent.

Workaround: Forward all syslogs from the macOS system.

Scroll Type settings not saved to table widget

When you edit a table widget and select Pagination > Scroll Type > Paginator, the Scroll Type settings are not saved to the widget.

Workaround: There is no workaround at the moment. SolarWinds is working on resolving this issue in a future version.

Installer fails to start on Windows Server 2025

When trying to install the SolarWinds-SEM-2025.2-RC1-Agent-WindowsInstaller, the installer does not start and returns an error.

Workarounds (Choose either):

  • Create an environment variable named JAVA_TOOL_OPTIONS with the value:
    “-Dos.name=Windows Server 2025”

  • Use the SEM agent installer without the bundled JVM combined with Java version 17.0.12 (not newer installer from version 17).
