Documentation forPatch Manager

Pre-flight checklist

Before installing Patch Manager, complete the pre-installation checklist below. This checklist helps you:

  • Verify that all system requirements are met, all required software is installed, and required roles and features are enabled.
  • Gather the information required to complete the installation.
Review the release notes

Review the latest Patch Manager release notes and available documentation in the Success Center.

Review the system requirements Make sure your environment has all of the required hardware, software, and database requirements for your installation.
Run all Windows updates Before the installation, check for and run all Windows updates on all servers. As you install, if a Windows update runs, your system may reboot as needed by Windows. The installation cannot complete if your system is waiting to reboot.
Prepare the product license

Review your current product license and determine if you need to make any changes. You can download any updated license keys through the Customer Portal.

If you need to modify your license, contact your SolarWinds account manager or SolarWinds Technical Support.

Gather credentials

Make sure you have the following:

  • All account credentials
  • SQL Server database credentials
  • SolarWinds account credentials
  • Local admin server credentials.

Use the local administrator Account to install the software.

The local administrator account is not the same as a domain account with local admin rights. A domain account is subject to your domain group policies.

To download SolarWinds products and licenses, you need a user account to SolarWinds Customer Portal account. See Access the Customer Portal for details.

Gather the database credentials

(Orion Platform deployment only)

If you are integrating Patch Manager with the Orion Platform, obtain sysadmin rights to the Orion server and Additional Web Server.

Also, ensure that you have database credentials to an SQL Server database to install and configure the Patch Manager Orion Web Console.

Beginning in Patch Manager 2019.4, you can install the Patch Manager Integration Module and multiple Orion Platform products using the Orion Platform Installer. This module includes the Patch Manager Web Console and all required services.

Update the Orion server to .NET Framework 4.8

(Orion Platform deployment only)

Verify that .NET Framework 4.8 is installed on the server.

When you download and run the Patch Manager Orion Web Console installer for an online installation, the installer downloads and installs the software for you during the installation procedure.

Before you download and run the Patch Manager Orion Web Console installer for an offline installation, install .NET Framework 4.8.

Beginning with Patch Manager 2019.4, the Patch Manager Integration module is included with the Orion Platform Installer. The Patch Manager Orion Web Console installer is the Orion Platform Installer with the Patch Manager Web Console as an installation option.

Verify that all Orion Platform modules are running the same version

(Orion Platform deployment only)

To save time during the installation, verify that all Orion Platform modules are the latest version (for example, Orion Platform 2022.2).

Review the Orion Platform installation procedures

(Orion Platform deployment only)

Review the Orion Platform Products Installation and Upgrade Guide for additional requirements before you install or upgrade products in a new or existing Orion Platform deployment.
Schedule the installation

Set up the maintenance window, preferably during off-peak hours. Depending on the size of databases and the environment, you may need an hour or more to complete the installation.

Installations in an existing Orion Platform environment require polling engines and SolarWinds services to be offline for a length of time. As a result, you may lose a portion of your polling data.

Notify your company Send a message to your company about the installation schedule and maintenance window. If you need additional help with the installation process, contact and allocate staff to be available.
