Configure custom maps
Custom maps display selected entities and their connections. Click Network > Topology > Custom Map to see a list of custom maps. Click a map to display it.
Requirements for managing custom maps
To add, edit, or delete custom maps, you need the Owner, Admin, or Member role for the Entity Management permission. If you have the Viewer permission for Entity Management, you can only view existing custom maps. See Permissions.
Create custom maps

On the Custom Maps tab, click Create map.

Drag entities from the Entity Library onto the canvas.
- Use filters or the search box to find entities.
- When you add an entity on a custom map, it automatically connects to all other entities on the map. When you delete an entity, all its connections are also removed from the map.

Save the map.

Click Save.

Provide a name. Optionally, you can add details in the Description field.

Click Save.
The map appears in the list the next time you click Network > Topology > Custom Maps.

Duplicate custom maps
if you need a similar custom map, duplicate an existing map and edit the copy.

On the Custom Maps tab, open the map you want to duplicate.

Click the vertical ellipses and select Duplicate.

Provide a new name and description for the new map, and then click Save.

Click Edit and adjust the map.
Add entities to custom maps

Go to Network > Topology > Custom Maps and click a map name to open the map.

Click Edit Map to enter edit mode. The Entity Library appears on the right.

Drag entities from the library onto the canvas.

If entities are connected, lines between them are drawn automatically. Connection color reflects utilization. See Change connection colors.

Click Save to apply your changes.
Remove entities from custom maps

Go to Network > Topology > Custom Maps and click a map name to open the map.

Click Edit Map to enter edit mode.

Right-click the entity you want to remove and select Delete.
You can also click the trash can icon in the top-right corner.

Click Save to apply your changes.
The entity and its connections are removed from the canvas.
Adjust maps and entities
Open a map in edit mode.
To move an entity, drag it to the new position and save the map.
To see more details about an entity or connection, click it. Details appear in the Inspector Panel.
Use the controls in the bottom-left corner of the map:

Use the slider or your mouse wheel to zoom in/out.

Use the navigation hub icon
to pan the map.Click the center to re-center the map, or use the arrows to move the map in the arrow direction.

To pan manually, click the arrow button (it changes into a hand icon), hold a mouse button, and drag the map.
Connect entities manually

Go to Network > Topology > Custom Maps and click the map you want to edit.

Click Edit Map to enter edit mode.

Select the entities you want to connect, then click the Connect Entity button in the top-right corner.
A gray dashed line appears between connected entities.

Click Save to apply your changes.
Change connection colors
Connection colors reflect utilization levels. To change when connection colors change, adjust the warning and critical thresholds for the map.
Default settings

Green - utilization below 80%
-
Yellow - utilization 80-90%
-
Red - utilization above 90%
-
Gray - utilization unknown
Change the utilization thresholds

Go to Network > Topology > Custom Maps and click the map you want to edit.

Click Edit Map to go to the edit mode.

Click the vertical ellipsis and select Edit Thresholds.

Adjust the warning and critical utilization levels

Save the changes.
The updated utilization thresholds are reflected on the map.

Click Save to apply your changes.
Delete custom maps

Go to Network > Topology > Custom Maps.

Click the vertical ellipsis next to the map you want to delete, select Delete, and confirm the deletion.
The map is deleted from SolarWinds Observability.
Add maps to a dashboard

Go to Network > Topology > Custom Maps.

Click the vertical ellipsis next to a map, click Send to Dashboard.

Select the dashboard:

To add the map as a widget to an existing dashboard, select the dashboard from the list.

To add the map to a new dashboard:

Select New Dashboard.

Provide a name for the dashboard and click Save.

The map appears as a widget on the selected dashboard.
