Virtual Domains for FortiGate

Use this widget to view FortiGate Virtual Domain (VDOM) information for the node, including the active context, operation mode, high availability state, and configuration details.

Operation Modes

FortiGate supports the following primary VDOM operation modes:

NAT (Network Address Translation)

The FortiGate device acts as a gateway between two networks, such as internal and external. It performs NAT by translating private IP addresses from the internal network to public IP addresses for outbound traffic.

This mode is ideal for typical routing scenarios where FortiGate serves as the main network gateway.

Transparent

The FortiGate device operates as a bridge between two networks without changing IP addresses. It functions as a Layer 2 device (similar to a switch) and does not perform NAT.

This mode is ideal for inserting FortiGate security services into an existing network without modifying the IP addressing scheme.

High Availability States

FortiGate VDOMs can be in one of the following high availability states:

  • Master

  • Backup

  • Standalone
