Scan your network

The Device Discovery Wizard searches for devices in your network and recommends resources to monitor on each device.

Using this wizard, you can:

• Control the discovery methods ipMonitor uses to perform the network scan
• Control the range of IP addresses that will be scanned
• Add non-standard ports to the list of ports that ipMonitor will probe
• Navigate through the list of returned items using the Add Device Wizard tree structure, which provides a visual representation of the device
• Use cached scan results to add monitors and groups to your installation over a period of time
• Exclude servers, workstations and devices from the list of resources that will be scanned when the Network Scan wizard recommends monitors to add to your installation

Using the wizard, you can create new monitors based on the detected resources.

A monitor is a unit of information (such as CPU usage) that is collected from a machine. They verify that a resource on a device is operating within a predetermined range. Depending on your ipMonitor license, you can configure up to 2500 monitors in the application. You can set up one or more monitors for each machine in your network.

The following procedure provides an example of how to apply new monitors based on an IP address range. For details on how to scan for VMware host systems, see VMware monitor.

1. Click Devices in the toolbar.

2. Click the Discovery drop-down menu and select Scan Network.

   

3. Select a method for scanning your network, and then click Next.

   

   You can choose one of the following options:

   • IP Range - Scans an IP address range for devices.
   • Add VMware Entities - Scans a device for a VMware ESXi host.
   • Network Neighborhood - Scans your Microsoft Active Directory for devices.
   • DNS Zone - Initiates a DNS zone transfer from a DNS server and scans the list for devices.
   • Host File Import - Scans a list of IP addresses for devices.

   For this example, IP Range is selected.

4. Enter the credentials required to access machines in your environment, and then click Next.

   If credentials are not required, accept the default selections.

   

5. Complete the remaining window based on your scanning method.

   For example, if you selected IP Range, enter an IP range to scan. Click Add to add additional address ranges.

   

6. Click Begin Discovery Scan.

   The discovery engine scans your network for devices. The following illustration shows a network scan using an IP range.

   This procedure may require several minutes to complete.

   

7. Select an option for your scanned results, and then click Finish.

   

   If you want to minimize your results to one or more specific monitor types, click Change SmartMonitor Settings, select your targeted monitor types, and then click Save.

   

   If you want to limit the found devices to subnet, type, or device name, select Only the found devices selected below and make your selections.

   

8. Click Finish.

   The scan results display in the wizard.

   You can also access the results by clicking Scan Results in the Configuration tab.
