Documentation forIpMonitor

VMware monitor

The VMware monitor connects to a computer system hosting a VMware ESXi virtual machine. The monitor tests the performance of its subsystems to determine the system health. Administrators can use this monitor to Identify performance metrics in the host system.

The ipMonitor Service works in conjunction with the SolarWinds Snap Collector—an open framework designed to collect, process, and publish system data through a single API. The collector is installed on the ipMonitor server when you install or upgrade ipMonitor.

The service sends a task to the connector containing the monitor parameters and any needed credentials to access the host server. The connector REST API sends a task through a secure connection to the vSphere API running on the host system, collects the requested data, and returns it to the service. The service processes and then publishes the data back to the ipMonitor Service. ipMonitor displays this data in the web interface.

Create a VMware monitor

Use the Device Discovery Wizard to create a VMware monitor.

The VMware monitor requires specific credentials to ensure that the integration between ipMonitor and the ESXi host remains intact. See Add a credential for details.
  1. Click Devices in the toolbar.
  2. Click the Discovery drop-down menu and select Scan Network.

  3. Select Add VMware Entities, and click Next.

  4. Enter the host IP address or hostname and select a credential.

If the targeted credential does not display in the Select credential drop-down menu, click Add a new credential and create a new credential for this host. You can enter multiple hosts, but only select one credential.

In this example, esx1 is the name configured for the selected credential. When you add a new credential, use a naming convention that applies to your corporate requirements.
  5. Click Next.

The wizard tests the credentials. When completed, a list of available monitors display on the screen.

  6. Select the monitors for your VMware ESXi host.

You can select one or more checkboxes to filter your monitor options.

  7. Click Finish.

  8. In the Devices > All Managed Devices screen, locate and click the IP address or host name of your ESXi host.

Your monitors display in the All Managed Devices screen.

Edit a VMware monitor

  1. Click Devices > All Managed Devices.
  2. Click the IP address or host of the VMware monitor.

  3. Click the target monitor name.
  4. Review the Identification, Threshold, Timing, Notification Control, and Recovery Parameters settings.
  5. Update the settings as required.
  6. Click OK.
