Upgrade ARM

The upgrade installers upgrade your deployment to the latest version based on a supported upgrade path. These installers are located on the SolarWinds Customer Portal.

See the following sections to plan and prepare for your upgrade.

Supported upgrade paths

The following table lists the supported upgrade paths for each ARM version.

Current version Upgrade Path
2023.2 2023.2.3
2022.4 2023.2 ® 2023.2.3
2022.2 2022.4 ® 2023.2 ® 2023.2.3

Upgrade checklist

Use the following checklist to plan and prepare for your upgrade.

Review the release notes for information about comprehensive and long term changes to the database.
Review the system requirements to ensure that your environment meets all hardware and software requirements.

Run all Windows operating system updates on the ARM server.

If your deployment is running SolarWinds Patch Manager, you can push the Microsoft Windows updates to the ARM server.
SolarWinds strongly recommends installing ARM on a server that is neither public nor internet-facing. See Secure your ARM deployment for more information.
Verify that the ARM server is not in "waiting for restart" status--for example, waiting to restart due to a Windows update.

Verify that the ARM server and all collector servers are running Microsoft .NET 4.8 Framework or higher.

You can download the software from the Microsoft .NET website located at dotnet.microsoft.com.
Ensure that you have uninterrupted access to the SQL database during the update with no scheduled database backups.

Check the server-status menu and ensure that all users are logged out of the ARM applications.

When the update is completed, the ARM service restarts, which forces all open ARM applications to crash.

Run the upgrade installers

If you are upgrading to version 2019.4, the automatic collector update only works if the collector server is running .NET 4.8 framework or higher. The automatic collector update does NOT push .NET 4.8 framework installation on the collectors. SolarWinds recommends that you update all collector servers with .NET framework 4.8 or higher before you upgrade ARM to version 2019.4.

Download the installers

  1. Go to the SolarWinds Customer Portal.

  2. Enter your login credentials, and then click Log In.

  3. Click Downloads > Product Downloads.

  4. Click the Products drop-down menu and select Access Rights Manager (ARM).

  5. Click the Licenses drop-down menu and select your license type.

  6. Under All Release Downloads in the Access Rights Manager (ARM) row, click the Product version drop-down menu and select the first version in your upgrade path.

  7. Click Download.

  8. Review the information in the pop-up window, and then click Finish Download.

  9. Repeat step 6 through step 8 for each additional version in your upgrade path.

  10. Copy the ARM installer(s) into a local folder. Do not use a network folder.

  11. Unzip each installer file using a file archiving utility (such as 7-Zip).

Run the installers

Perform the following steps to upgrade your ARM software based on the supported upgrade path.

  1. Locate the first installer in your upgrade path.

  2. Right click the installer file and select Run as Administrator.

The ARM installation wizard starts automatically in update mode and the component selection will remain unchanged. If the collectors are in use, they will be updated automatically.

The setup language is automatically selected to match the language of the operating system for the following languages: German, English, French. Otherwise, English is selected.

The setup identifies the currently installed version and will perform an upgrade on older installations. If a newer version is already installed, the setup is canceled.

  3. Click Next to continue.

  4. If you agree with the SolarWinds End User License Agreement (EULA), select I accept, and then click Next.

  5. In the Install Report window under Confirmation Required, click the SolarWinds security recommendations link and review the recommendations. After you finish the review, select the checkbox to confirm.

  6. Review the system check results, and then click Next.

During the upgrade, ARM Setup automatically checks for any missing required components.

If all required components are installed, the installer displays a message stating that the upgrade was successful.

  7. In the Complete section, review the upgrade summary, and then click Finish.

    The upgrade is completed.

  8. Repeat step 1 through step 7 for each additional installer in your upgrade path.
