Change passwords for SolarWinds Platform users

This topic applies to all SolarWinds Platform (self-hosted) products.

When you log in to the SolarWinds Platform Web Console for the first time after you have deployed your SolarWinds Platform products, you are prompted to create a password for the Admin account. This password cannot be blank and must be 8-256 characters long.

Recommendations for strong passwords

  • Use eight or more characters.
  • Combine lowercase, uppercase, numeric, and special characters.
  • Don't use dictionary words or substitute numbers for letters.

Hardening account password requirements

Starting with 2024.1, you can configure the SolarWinds Platform to enforce more secure requirements for SolarWinds Platform local account passwords.

Go to Centralized Settings, find the Orion.Account.PasswordPolicy section, and configure password requirements.

Set a minimum password length

Go to Centralized Settings, find PasswordMinLength and enter the minimum number of characters required for passwords.

The default minimum number of characters is 8. If a smaller number than 8 is entered, it will be ignored and the default 8 characters will be required.

The minimum characters configured are included in the Creating a good password hint in the SolarWinds Platform Web Console.

Do not allow dictionary words in the password

Go to Centralized Settings, find DictionaryWordsCheckEnabled and select the option.

Users will not be able to use dictionary words in their passwords. Dictionary words are hard-coded and include "Orion", "SolarWinds", "solarwinds123".

Do not allow reusing past passwords

Go to Centralized Settings, find PasswordHistoryEnforcementCount and type the nmuber of past passwords that must not repeat.

The default value is 0 and it means that users can reuse old passwords.

The maximum supported value is 12. If you enter a higher number, 12 will be applied instead.

Only passwords changed after the upgrade to 2024.1 will be remembered.

If you specify the number of passwords that must not repeat, the information will be added to the Creating a good password hint in the SolarWinds Platform Web Console.

Change the password for your user account

The following steps change passwords for Orion individual accounts. If you are using Windows accounts (Active Directory or local domain accounts) or SAML accounts to log in to the SolarWinds Platform Web Console, you need to contact your system administrator or identity provider to change your user password.

  1. Log in to the SolarWinds Platform Web Console.

When your password is getting close to the expiration date, click Reset Password on the pop-up and specify a new password. If your password already expired, contact your administrator to change it.

  2. Click your user name in the top right and select Profile.

  3. On your profile page, click Reset Password.

  4. On the Change [username] password page, type the old password and define a new one.

  5. Click Change Password.

    The password is changed.

Change a password for a user account (Administrators)

  1. Log in to the SolarWinds Platform Web Console using an account with Administrator rights, and click Settings > All Settings.

  2. Click Manage Accounts in the User Accounts grouping.

  3. Select a user, and click Change Password.

If the Change Password button is not active, make sure that the selected account is not a Windows or a SAML account.

If you cannot see an account in the Individual Accounts tab, check the Groups tab. The user might be a member of a group.

  4. Enter and confirm the new password, and click Change Password.

If these steps do not work for you, please contact SolarWinds support.
