Network Performance Monitor Getting Started Guide

Get Network Performance Monitor (NPM) up and running to start monitoring your routers, switches, firewalls, and other network devices right away.

To get started with NPM, complete the following tasks.

Determine where to start.

Have you already installed and configured other SolarWinds Observability Self-Hosted products?

  • If this is your first SolarWinds Observability Self-Hosted product, start with the tasks listed in the SolarWinds Observability Self-Hosted Getting Started Guide, and then continue with this list.

  • If you have already performed those tasks for one or more SolarWinds Observability Self-Hosted products, continue with this list.

Discover the devices on your network and select devices to monitor. See Discover your network and import devices for monitoring.

Investigate devices with issues:

Manage interfaces.

Review interface status and health, and edit, disable, or remotely manage interfaces as needed. See Manage interfaces.

Monitor and forecast capacity usage.

Track usage trends on nodes, interfaces, and volumes to see capacity issues coming before they affect performance. See Monitor and forecast capacity usage.

Network Routing Insights.

Correlate routes, peers, interfaces, and VRFs in one place to understand routing health and stability across your network. See Network Routing Insights.

Discover your network paths with NetPath.

See the hop-by-hop path traffic takes to a service, on-premises or across the internet, to pinpoint where a slowdown is happening. See Discover your network paths with NetPath.

Monitor firewalls. Monitor firewall health and VPN tunnels for Cisco ASA, Palo Alto Networks, Cisco Firepower, and Fortinet FortiGate devices. See Monitor firewalls.

Monitor load balancers. See the health of an entire load-balanced service, including virtual servers, pools, and pool members, for F5 BIG-IP devices. See Monitor load balancers.

Monitor SD-WAN.

Monitor SD-WAN orchestrators, edge devices, and tunnel performance for vendors including Cisco Catalyst, Aruba EdgeConnect, Fortinet, Palo Alto Prisma, and VeloCloud. See Monitor SD-WAN.

Monitor software-defined networks.

Monitor Cisco ACI fabric health and tenant-level details alongside your traditional network infrastructure. See Monitor software-defined networks.

Monitor switches and switch stacks.

Monitor switch and port-level status across vendors, including Arista, Aruba, Cisco Catalyst, Cisco Nexus, Fortinet, and Meraki. See Monitor switches.

Monitor stack membership, ring status, and member health for Cisco, Aruba, and Juniper switch stacks. See Monitor switch stacks.

Monitor wireless infrastructure.

Monitor wireless controllers, access points, and clients, and visualize coverage with heat maps, across vendors including Cisco, Aruba, Meraki, Juniper Mist, and Ruckus. See Monitor wireless infrastructure.
