Monitor GCP Cloud Routers

Monitor Google Cloud Routers, including their BGP sessions and associated Cloud NAT gateways. Get visibility into router configuration, BGP peer status, route counts, and NAT gateway traffic to detect connectivity issues in hybrid and multi-cloud networks.

Before you begin

  • Ensure that Cloud Router monitoring is enabled for the account.

Requirements

Your GCP project and service account need the following APIs, roles, and permissions:

APIs

  • Compute Engine API - used to discover Cloud Routers and retrieve router, BGP peer, and NAT gateway status
  • Cloud Monitoring API - used to collect Cloud Router, BGP, and NAT metrics

Roles

Assign one of the following roles to the service account:

  • roles/compute.viewer
  • roles/compute.networkViewer

Permissions

  • compute.routers.get
  • compute.routers.list

License

  • Requires a SolarWinds Observability Self-Hosted license.

  • Each monitored Cloud Router counts as a node against the license node count. BGP peers and Cloud NAT gateways associated with the router are covered by the Cloud Router license and do not consume additional licenses.

  • To manage or limit monitoring, use Region filters. Tag filters are not supported for Cloud Routers.

Supported data

  • Cloud Routers - router status, number of best received routes, and number of sent routes.

  • BGP peers on each router - BGP session status, number of received routes, and number of sent routes.

  • Cloud NAT gateways attached to each router - received and sent bytes, received and sent packets, dropped received and sent packets, new, closed, and open connections, and allocation failures.

Enable Cloud Router monitoring for your cloud account

If you configured your cloud account to monitor all supported resources or use tags to define the resources, the feature is enabled automatically. If you selected specific resources, enable the feature manually.

  1. In SolarWinds Platform Web Console, click Settings > Cloud Discovery. This opens the Manage Cloud Accounts page.

  2. Select the GCP account where you want to monitor Cloud Routers and click Edit Properties. The Edit Cloud Account wizard opens.

  3. Go to the Monitored resources screen, select Monitor selected entities, expand Network, and ensure GCP Cloud Router is selected.

  4. Complete the wizard.

Cloud Routers in the monitored regions appear after the next polling cycle.

If you turn off Cloud Router monitoring, historical data for Cloud Routers, BGP peers, and Cloud NAT gateways collected on the account is lost.

View Cloud Router details

  1. Click Dashboards > Cloud > GCP to get an overview of monitored GCP resources.

  2. Click the Network tab and review the Cloud Routers widget to see the number of monitored Cloud Routers.

  3. Click the Cloud Routers widget title to go to the Cloud Routers overview. The overview includes the total number of routers, router health, BGP peer status, triggered alerts, and the List of Routers widget with the status, region, network, and BGP and NAT information for each router.

  4. Click a router to display the Cloud Router details view with router-level metrics, and BGP sessions and Cloud NAT gateways associated with the router.

Cloud Routers, BGP peers, and Cloud NAT gateways are available in PerfStack, reports, and groups. You can create custom alerts for the entities. Out-of-the-box alerts are not available for Cloud Router entities.
