Monitor Azure Virtual Machine backup status

The Azure Virtual Machine backup status monitoring feature enables SolarWinds Platform to monitor and report on the backup details of Azure virtual machines protected by Azure Recovery Services vaults. It provides visibility into backup health, protection state, and the most recent successful backup for each VM.

The Azure Virtual Machine backup status feature is enabled by default. To verify this setting, go to the Advanced Configuration page and, under CloudMonitoring.Azure, make sure that the AzureVirtualMachineBackupStatusEnabled checkbox is selected. Clear the checkbox if you want to disable the feature.

Monitoring of Azure VM backup status details occurs through periodic polling. The system checks for updated backup information every 5 minutes and stores the latest results. For details on polling limits, see Understand Azure polling limits. For information on throttling limits, see Azure throttling.

The feature includes an out-of-the-box alert named Azure Cloud VM Backup Failed, which is enabled by default. This alert notifies you whenever a backup operation for an Azure virtual machine fails, giving you immediate visibility into issues that may affect backup reliability.

Due to a limitation in the Azure Resource Graph KQL query, backup-related data may also be returned for terminated virtual machines that previously had backup enabled. These orphaned records are automatically removed during Database Maintenance to ensure that only current and valid backup information is retained.

View Azure Virtual Machine backup status details

  1. Click My Dashboards > Cloud > Azure. On the Compute tab, click the Virtual Machines widget title.

  2. Click the Azure virtual machine to review backup‑related details in the Azure Cloud VM Details widget:

    • Backup Enabled: Indicates whether backup is enabled for the VM. The value will be Yes or No.

    • Last Backup Status: Shows the outcome of the most recent backup operation, such as Completed.

    • Last Backup Poll: Displays the timestamp of the most recent backup-status poll.

    • If the VM is not enabled for backup, only Backup Enabled: No is displayed.

If you disable Azure Virtual Machine backup status monitoring, no backup-related information is displayed.
