New features and improvements in NTM

NTM 2.3.0.50171

This build was released on February 19, 2024. It adds a pop-up into the installation wizard to inform customers that installing NTM 2.3 requires that they already have installed Microsoft SQL Server Compact 4.0.

NTM 2.3.0.50153

This build was released on January 17, 2024 and includes the following improvements.

  • Support for vCenter 5.5 and later

  • MS SQL CE upgraded to version 4.0

Before you upgrade!

The NTM 2.3 installer is in the format of MSI file.

Install Microsoft SQL Server Compact 4.0 before you install NTM 2.3. You can download it from the Microsoft Download Center at https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=30709 (© 2024 Microsoft, available at https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=30709, obtained on February 1, 2024.)

Installation or upgrade

  • If you are on a version earlier than NTM to 2.2.2.816, first upgrade to 2.2.2.816 and then upgrade to 2.3.0.

  • After you install NTM 2.3 or upgrade to NTM 2.3, make sure the SolarWinds Job Engine service is running:

    1. Open Task Manager > Services and find SolarWinds Job Engine.

    2. If it is not running, right-click it and select Restart.

      Alternatively, you can also restart the machine.

For new installations, you can download the installation file from the product page on https://www.solarwinds.com or from the Customer Portal and install NTM on a standalone server. For more information, see Install NTM.

Known issues

Recently added applications or menu items disappear after the upgrade to NTM 2.3

After you upgrade to NTM 2.3, recently added applications or menu items might disappear.

Resolution or workaround: Restart the computer to resolve the issue.

NTM not in the Windows taskbar after the upgrade

After you upgrade to NTM 2.3, NTM might have disappeared from your taskbar.

Resolution or workaround: Unpin NTM and pin it to the taskbar after the upgrade.

Upgrading NTM blocked by a pop-up window

If the upgrade from NTM 2.2.2.816 to 2.3.0 seems to take a long time, it might be blocked by an installer pop-up window.

Resolution or workaround: Drag the Installer window to the side and confirm the popup window to complete the upgrade.

Non-administrator users cannot install NTM 2.3

Users without administrator privileges cannot install NTM 2.3.

Resolution or workaround: To install NTM 2.3 using an account without administrator privileges, complete the following steps.

  1. Download the NTM 2.3 installation file.

  2. Run PowerShell as administrator: Search for PowerShell in the taskbar, right-click Windows PowerShell in the search results, and click Run as administrator.

  3. In PowerShell, go to the System32 folder.

    cd C:\Windows\System32
  4. Review the following command, replace <installation file location> with your location. If necessary, adjust the path to logs.

    .\msiexec.exe /i "<installation file location, such as C:\Users\nonadmin\Downloads\NTM-2.3.0.50133\SolarWinds Network Topology Mapper.msi>" /L*V "C:\Users\nonadmin\Downloads\NTM-2.3.0.50133\SolarWinds Network Topology Mapper-msi.log"
    

Discovery schedules created in NTM 2.3 RC stop working after the upgrade to NTM 2.3 GA

Discovery schedules created in NTM 2.3 RC version (2.3.0.50108) do not work after the upgrade to NTM 2.3 GA version (2.3.0.50133).

Resolution or workaround: After the upgrade to the GA version, change the schedules created in NTM 2.3 RC manually in the map properties.

  1. Open the map in NTM.

  2. Right-click the map and select Edit map properties.

  3. Reschedule the discovery and click Discover in the summary.

License Manager Error: Could not retrieve new version

When you open the License Manager to activate NTM 2.3 license, you receive an error, saying that the new version of the application cannot be retrieved. This happens if you are running a License Manager version earlier than 6.2.5020096.

Resolution or workaround: Upgrade the License Manager.

  1. Log in to the Customer Portal, click Downloads > License Manager. See Access the Customer Portal.

  2. Download the most recent version of the License Manager, install it on the NTM server, and activate NTM 2.3.

End of life

2.1.1 January 17, 2024: End-of-Life (EoL) announcement – Customers on NTM version 2.1.1 should begin transitioning to the latest version of NTM.   April 17, 2024: End-of-Engineering (EoE) – Service releases, bug fixes, workarounds, and service packs for NTM version 2.1.1 will no longer be actively supported by SolarWinds. April 17, 2025: End-of-Life (EoL) – SolarWinds will no longer provide technical support for NTM version 2.1.1.

End of support

This version of Network Topology Mapper no longer supports the following platforms and features.

Exporting NTM Maps to Network Atlas Automated synchronization of NTM map updates to the Network Atlas is no longer supported.

Microsoft Windows 8.1, 8, and 7

Microsoft Windows 8.1, 8, and 7 are no longer supported in NTM 2.3.

SolarWinds recommends that you upgrade the operating system of your NTM server to Windows 10 or Windows 11. See NTM 2.3 system requirements.

Microsoft Windows Server 2003 SP2 and R2

Microsoft Windows Server 2003 SP2 and R2 are no longer supported in NTM 2.3.

SolarWinds recommends that you upgrade the operating system of your NTM server to Windows Server 2016, 2019, or 2022. See NTM 2.3 system requirements.

Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1

Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 is no longer supported in NTM 2.3.

SolarWinds recommends that you upgrade the operating system of your NTM server to Windows Server 2016, 2019, or 2022. See NTM 2.3 system requirements.

Microsoft Windows Server 2012 and 2012 R2

Microsoft Windows Server 2012 and 2012 R2 are no longer supported in NTM 2.3.
