Configure live DNS lookup for IPv4 and IPv6 addresses in NTA

Disabling the option Resolve and store hostnames at the time of ingestion when the option Live DNS Lookup for IPv4 and IPv6 addresses is enabled decreases the amount of database memory used to store DNS information and the read and write load on your SQL server associated with domain name resolution.

With the option Live DNS Lookup for IPv4 and IPv6 addresses enabled and the option Resolve and store hostnames at the time of ingestion disabled, domain names are only resolved for device IP addresses that are actually displayed in SolarWinds NTA widgets. Since they require DNS resolution with storing to calculate statistics, Top XX Domains, Top XX Traffic Destinations by Domain (report), and Top XX Traffic Sources by Domain (report) become unavailable with this setting.

1. In the SolarWinds Platform Web Console, click Settings > All Settings.
2. Under Product Specific Settings, click NTA Settings.
3. Scroll to the DNS and NetBIOS Resolution section.
4. Make sure the option Resolve and store hostnames at the time of ingestion is unselected.
5. Make sure the option Live DNS Lookup for IPv4 and IPv6 addresses is selected.
6. Click Save.
