Manage Symantec Backup Exec with Mobile Admin

This chapter provides information about how to use the Mobile Admin Client to manage Symantec (previously Veritas) Backup Exec servers, versions 10d and later. To manage Backup Exec servers, the Mobile Admin user must be in the Administrators group of the Backup Exec host computer. For example, if the user logs in to Mobile Admin as "sample/user", then "sample/user" must be in the Administrators group on the Backup Exec host computer.

All procedures in this section assume that you are logged in to Mobile Admin and that you have selected the Backup Exec service on a server that hosts Backup Exec from your Manage Hosts list, or have selected the Backup Exec service from the Manage Services list.

Detection

The Mobile Admin server will detect Symantec Backup Exec on a host if the Backup Exec service is found.

Authentication

Your Mobile Admin login credentials are used to manage Symantec Backup Exec. Alternate credentials will not successfully authenticate a user.

Communication method

The .NET sqlClient and the Backup Exec Command Line Applet (BEMCMD) are used for management on Backup Exec 10d to 2010.

The .NET sqlClient and the Backup Exec Command Line Interface (BEMCLI) are used for management on Backup Exec 2012.

Troubleshooting

To ensure the Mobile Admin server can detect the Backup Exec 2012 server, open WBEMtest and run the following query against the Backup Exec server.

select * from Win32_Service where Name like "backupexecrpcservice"

If you receive one of the following errors, the credentials you used to log in to the SQL server are incorrect. Ensure that you can connect to the Backup Exec SQL server with your credentials, or use alternate credentials.

Error when Login failed for user ' '. The user is not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection.

Login failed. The login is from an untrusted domain and cannot be used with Windows authentication.

If you receive a WinRM error, WinRM may not be configured correctly. Review the configuration steps in Configuring Specialized Servers
