About feeds in Mobile Admin

A feed is a list of notifications for a particular service. Feeds list the last 20 notifications. You can add or delete feeds from Notifications by subscribing to or unsubscribing from the feeds.

When you subscribe to a feed, Mobile Admin pushes the notifications to your mobile device. You can perform actions directly from these notifications.

Typical use-cases of Mobile Admin Notifications

The following are typical use-cases of Mobile Admin Notifications.

You want to monitor your virtual machines in your VMware deployment.

This system will most likely already be monitored by your existing monitoring system, but you want to ensure that if something happens to this virtual machine you are notified instantly and outside of your usual notification methods such as email and SMS.

To monitor your virtual machines:

  1. In the Mobile Admin VMware interface, browse to your virtual machine's Alarm list.
  2. Click Subscribe to this feed.
You are subscribed to a new feed.
The Mobile Admin server will periodically check this feed's state. If a new Alarm is triggered for the virtual machine, the Mobile Admin Server sends a push notification to your device.

A few days later, an Alarm displays for the virtual machine, stating that it is low on memory. You receive a notification on your device regardless if the Mobile Admin app is running or not. Acknowledging this notification on your device starts the Mobile Admin app and brings you directly to the Notifications view. From the Notifications view, you can view basic information about the alarm. Selecting this notification takes you to the full Alarm details page in the Mobile Admin VMware interface.

Now that you are in the Mobile Admin VMware interface, you can resolve this issue.

You use SolarWinds Network Performance Monitor to monitor your network and be notified when critical alerts occur.

To monitor your network and receive alerts:

  1. In the Mobile Admin Services or Mobile Admin Hosts list, browse to your SolarWinds NPM installation.
  2. Tap Active Alerts.
  3. Use the Actions menu to create a filter on the alerts feed.
  4. Tap Subscribe to this feed.
If a new alert occurs, the Mobile Admin Server sends a push notification to your device.

If a network device goes down (assuming that this scenario is included in your filter), you will receive a notification on your device regardless if the Mobile Admin app is running or not. After you acknowledge the notification on your device, the Mobile Admin app starts and displays the Notifications view. In this view, you can review basic information about the raised Alarm. Selecting this notification takes you to the full details page in the Mobile Admin SolarWinds interface.

Mobile Admin Dashboard and Notifiers can notify you of state changes associated with the following Mobile Admin interfaces:

  • Veritas® Backup Exec®

  • VMware®
  • HP® iLO 2/3
  • Microsoft Active Directory®

Mobile Admin Server also includes lightweight monitors if you don't have access to a monitoring system or for when a simple up-down monitor is sufficient:

  • Email server monitor
  • Ping monitor
  • Website uptime monitor
  • Windows performance monitor
  • Windows service monitor

Mobile Admin Notifications are available for the BlackBerry, iPhone, iPad and Android (2.2 and up) platforms.
