Trace Route tool

The Trace Route tool in ETS for the Web shows the communication path between your PC and a target device, analyzes the performance and latency of each hop across the communication path, and displays SNMP information for the devices along the path.

Trace Route continuously monitors the response time of each hop and keeps running averages, minimums, and maximums.

Access the Trace Route tool

  1. Log in to the SolarWinds Platform Web Console as an administrator.

  2. Click My Dashboards > Toolset > All Tools.

  3. Under My Tools, click Trace Route.

Trace a route to a device

  1. Specify the host name or IP address of the target device to which you want to trace the route:

    • Enter the host name or IP address you want to trace in the field.

    • If the host name is already available in the SolarWinds Platform, you can search for it. Click Select from SolarWinds Platform, locate and select the device, and click Select Object.

  2. To include the DNS name in the results table, select Resolve DNS.

Resolving DNS names might be time-consuming.

  3. To start Trace Route, click Trace.

The results of the trace are displayed as a table. Details for each hop are displayed in a new row.

Supported metrics

The results table can display the following metrics:

  • Hop: The number of hops
  • IP address
  • DNS Name: Displayed only if the Resolve DNS box is selected. To speed up tracing the route, clear the box.
  • Response Time in ms
  • Maximum Response Time in ms
  • Minimum Response Time in ms
  • Average Response Time in ms
  • Packet Loss in %

Show metrics in the results table

  2. Select the metric in the Available Metrics area.
  3. Click the green button to move the selected metric to the Selected Metrics area.
