Recycle SEM licenses

License recycling allows you to collect and reuse your subscription or perpetual SEM licenses from monitored nodes that have not sent an event to the SEM manager within a specified amount of time.

This feature helps you minimize your IT software expenses by maximizing your Universal (SEM) and Workstation Edition (SWE) license pools. Using License recycling, you can repurpose your SEM licenses to collect log data, monitor event traffic, and view historical events from only active non-agent devices and workstations in your deployment.

Set up license recycling

  1. Log in to the SEM console as an administrator.

  2. Open Settings.

  3. In the left column, click License.

  4. Click the Recycle tab.

  5. Select the monitored nodes you want to check for recycling.

Select All to check all available nodes.

Select Selected Nodes to check the nodes in defined groups that you select from the drop-down menu. Your selections display in the drop-down menu field.

Select All Except Selected Nodes to check all nodes except for the nodes in defined groups that you select from the drop-down menu. Your selections display in the drop-down menu field.

  6. Select the amount of time to pass before SEM recycles the license of the node.

  7. To create a license recycling schedule, go to the next step.

To recycle the SEM license on all selected nodes now, click Recycle now.

  8. Create a schedule to recycle the licenses on your selected nodes.

    1. Select the Schedule recycling checkbox.

    2. Create a daily, weekly, or monthly license recycling schedule.

For daily license recycling, click the drop-down menus and select the occurrence and date values, and then select the starting date.

For example, every 60 minutes starting on April 17th at 5 PM...

...every eight hours starting on April 17th at 5 PM...

...or every seven days starting on April 17th at 5 PM.

For weekly license recycling, select Weekly and the weekly occurrence in the drop-down menus and checkboxes.

For example, every week on Monday and Friday starting on April 17th at 5 PM.

For monthly license recycling, select Month, the monthly occurrence, the day of the month, and the starting time and date.

For example, every month on the 15th day of the month starting at 5 PM on April 17th.

    3. Click Save.
