How Do I Connect to a Server?

Before you can transfer files with FTP Voyager, you must connect to a server. There are generally two ways to do this, and you should pick one or the other depending on how often you think you'll be connecting to this server.

How often do you plan to connect to this server? (Click one answer.)

Connect just once with Quick Connect

  1. Click the Browser Tab on the Ribbon. Notice that the right half of this ribbon contains a Quick Connect group.
  2. Take the connection information you received from a server administrator and enter it into the Quick Connect form like this:
Hostname or URL Type (or copy/paste) the hostname, IP address or address you received
Login ID Type the username, user ID or Login ID you received
Password Type the password you received
Port Leave this alone unless you received a specific Port value
Anonymous This is actually a button that behaves like a checkmark. Leave it OFF (i.e., a deactivated state).
Connection Type This is actually a drop-down list that let's you choose which protocol to use. (See Learn About Protocols for more information.)
  3. Click the Connect button to complete your connection.
  4. If your connection fails:
    • Double-check the information on your Quick Connect form.
    • Try a different type of "FTP over..." if you are using FTPS.
    • Copy the contents of the Log window (right-click, select Copy to Clipboard) and paste into an email to the server administrator requesting more help.

Connect multiple times with a new site profile

  1. Click the Browser Tab on the Ribbon.
  2. Click the New Site Wizard in the Site Profile group.
  3. Click through the Site Profile Wizard. Take the connection information you received from a server administrator and enter it into the Wizard like this:

Hostname or IP: Type (or copy/paste) the hostname, IP address or address you received.
Connection Type: This is actually a drop-down list that let's you choose which protocol to use. (See Learn About Protocols for more information.)
Port: Leave this alone unless you received a specific Port value
  4. Username: Type the username, user ID or Login ID you received.
Password: Type the password you received.
    Anonymous login Leave this unchecked.

When I connect to this site...: Leave this alone (set to Open the remote window).

Site Profile Name: Leave this as is (or type something like "My First Site")

Connect to this site now: Leave this checked.
  5. Click the Finish button to complete your connection.
  6. If your connection fails:
    • Open Browser | Site Profiles, from the Ribbon, and select your new site.
      • Double-check your Site Information.
      • Try a different Connection Type if you are using FTPS.
    • Copy the contents of the Log window (right-click, select Copy to Clipboard) and paste into an email to the server administrator requesting more help.

  7. If your connection works, you can reopen it at any time by opening the Site Profile Manager and double-clicking your site. Advanced users may also want to:
    • Left-click the Application Button located within the Ribbon and select this site from the list of New Remote Browser options.
    • Use the Windows 7 jump list to pin this site to your tray icon. To do this, open and close your site, then right-click the FTP Voyager entry in the tray. Then select-and-drag your site into the Pinned list.
