Released March 12, 2019

Updated June 28, 2019

These release notes describe the new features, improvements, and fixed issues in SAM 6.8, an Orion Platform product that consumes Orion Platform 2018.4. These notes also provide information about upgrades and known issues.

Additional resources include SAM 6.8 system requirements, SAM Administrator Guide, Orion Platform Administrator Guide, and the Orion Platform 2018.4 release notes.

New features and improvements

Read this section for descriptions of new features and improvements offered in this release. For previous release information, see SAM Previous Versions. You can also compare this release with previous releases of SAM.

AppInsight for Active Directory

Microsoft® Active Directory® is a critical tool for system administrators that has a large number of different metrics so it can be hard to know which ones to track. By adding AppInsight for Active Directory to the suite of AppInsight applications, SAM provides a way to monitor physical and virtual AD environments to identify issues about domain controllers, replication, and more.

Some ways you can use AppInsight for Active Directory include:

  • Display status and metrics on the new Active Directory Application Details page.
  • Track replication status between domain controllers.
  • Diagnose domain controller issues by tracking performance metrics, security events, and more.
  • Discover domain controllers within your environment.
  • Display the status of sites across your entire domain.

Improved Cisco® Unified Computing Systems (UCS) support

SAM 6.8 offers increased visibility into the health and performance of Cisco UCS devices that you can use to:

  • Monitor UCS chassis, blades, rack servers, sensors, fans, and more.
  • Manage hardware health sensors for controllers and related devices such as fans and power supply units.
  • Display chassis, blade, and rack server statistics in the AppStack Environment and Orion Maps.
  • View UCS error and failure messages.

For a list of alert trigger conditions added for UCS devices, see HardwareHealth BMC and UCS alerts.

New customer installation

Use the SolarWinds Orion Installer, available in the Customer Portal, to install SAM. After installation, refer to the SAM Getting Started Guide to learn about configuring and customizing SAM.

Before you upgrade

If upgrading from a previous version of SAM, be aware of the following considerations:

  • To ensure a smooth upgrade, do the following:
  • The Application Dependencies feature is disabled when upgrading from earlier versions of SAM to prevent performance issues for environments with large quantities of nodes. To start Application Dependency polling after an upgrade, enable the Application Dependencies feature.
  • If you exceed recommended cloud monitoring limits, you may see a 503 Service Unavailable message when adding an Azure account. See this article for a workaround.
  • To monitor Exchange Server 2016, install PowerShell 2.0 or later and provide local Administrator rights. Click here for details.

How to upgrade

If you are upgrading from SAM 6.5 or later:

  1. Use the SolarWinds Orion Installer to simultaneously upgrade one or more Orion Platform products on your main Orion server.

  2. Starting with SAM 6.8, if you have scalability engines such as Additional Polling Engines, you can use the Centralized Upgrade feature to upgrade the rest of your Orion deployment in parallel. For details, see Install or upgrade Orion Platform products.

If upgrading from SAM 6.3 or 6.4, click here to learn about planning and implementing an upgrade to the current version of SAM.

Fixed issues

Case Number Description

00213109, 00110026, 00039977

A SWIS query was updated to return ApplicationIDs attached to groups so templates can be attached to node groups in SAM 6.5 and later.

00234228, 00153397, 00141857

SubMetrics required by legacy event series were restored to ensure that all expected data and components appear in PerfStack widgets.

00242401, 00205613

The AppInsight for IIS template was updated after customers reported they could not save updates (for example, thresholds) in SAM 6.7 and SAM 6.7.1.

00212970, 00190063

Code was updated to fix a website issue related to duplication of views for the AppInsight for IIS application.

00229116, 00232908

netobjectPrefix and netObjectName objects were reintroduced for the Orion.APM.Application Entity in the Events table/entity so that Net Performance Monitor events are triggered by alerts, as occurred in earlier SAM versions. This fix also provides support for reports created based on NetObject in the Events table.

00225775

The MongoDB (Linux) template was updated to reduce output from 4 lines to 3. The extra line returned the version of MongoDB server as a non-integer value so "=$out[2]" was changed to "=$out[3]" in the script. Existing SAM customers can download the updated template from THWACK.

00149541

A stored procedure related to removing templates from nodes, apm_RefreshComponentThresholdCache, was updated to only trigger once to avoid deadlocks on the database.

1179502

The BusinessLayer configuration file was adjusted to prevent leftover jobs in the JobEngine database from stopping Agent services on Windows Server 2012 R2 machines.

00073142

Due to code improvements, IIS nodes integrated with SolarWinds AppOptics APM no longer display a "Could not load file or assembly" exception after AppOptics APM is removed from a node.

00073142, 00114730, 00160800, 00195194, 00194205

The Orion Server 2017.3 template was updated to adjust the File Count - JET Files component monitor that returns the number of JET files in C:\Windows\Temp that can block new database connections and halts polling. The File Extensions Filter for this component monitor was originally set to jet*.tmp and is now set to jet*.* so that exe, dll, and bat files are also counted. The updated template is included in SAM 6.8. For SAM 6.7.1 and earlier, download the updated template from THWACK.

00149541

Code was updated to prevent redundant threshold cache refresh procedures from running simultaneously, reducing the risk of deadlocks on the Orion database.

00210210, 00213757, 00205422, 00219741

DLL files for the main polling engine and Additional Polling Engines (APEs) were updated so the LDAP User Experience Monitor can resolve search request parameter issues.

00198692, 00222112, 00198692

Code was updated to resolve a database collation issue during upgrades that caused the Configuration Wizard to throw an exception similar to: Cannot resolve the collation conflict between "latin1_general_CI_AS_KS" and "SQL_Latin1_general_CP1_CI_AS".

00150171

The Real-Time Process Explorer (RTPE) was updated to resolve an issue with SAM Linux Process Monitor components entering an unknown state and returning this message: Process Explorer Error - Empty job result received.

Known issues

Total counters for AppInsight for Active Directory do not respond to Enable Total Counters setting in Internet Explorer 11

Issue: When using the Edit Application function to set the Enable Total Counters option for AppInsight for Active Directory, only the following elements are impacted by the changed setting, if using Internet Explorer 11:

  • User Accounts
  • Computer Accounts
  • Inactive Users

Workaround: Switch to another supported browser, as listed in the SAM 6.8 System Requirements.

AppInsight for Active Directory applications appear Down after disabling the Total Counters feature

Issue: Replication polling requires a DNS or SysName value to compute replication for a destination domain controller FQDN name, but nodes configured for ICMP polling do not provide this data. As a result, AppInsight for Active Directory widgets may not reflect the actual status of ICMP nodes. Another impact is that replication widgets display IP addresses for ICMP nodes instead of assigned node names.

Workaround: Configure AppInsight for Active Directory nodes as Windows Servers that support both WMI and ICMP polling so that AppInsight for Active Directory widgets can display node status and names properly via WMI. Alternatively, edit the name of an ICMP node on the Node Details > Edit Properties page.

Application pools and websites on nodes monitored by AppInsight for IIS show Unknown status instead of Down status after unmanaging them

Issue: After assigning AppInsight for IIS to a node, the application pools and websites exhibiting problem behavior could not be unmanaged in SAM. The status changed to Unknown but should appear as Down.

Workaround: Update the record in the Orion database. See Cannot unmanage application pools and websites on nodes with AppInsight for IIS.
