New features and improvements in Patch Manager

Patch Manager 2.1.4 offers new features and improvements compared to previous releases of Patch Manager.

Windows Server 2016 support

The SolarWinds Patch Manager Admin Console, Web Console, reports, and inventory tasks now display managed servers running Microsoft® Windows Server® 2016.

WSUS server time zone displays in approval windows

The update approval windows now include the Microsoft Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) server time and time zone. This feature helps you schedule an update based on the WSUS server time zone.

After you approve the update, the new time format displays in the Approval Updates window.

Improved Update Management Wizard

The Update Management Wizard includes improved dialog boxes to help you install software updates to the WSUS server.

Other improvements

  • Updated guidance in the Patch Manager Publishing Wizard for addressing API Mismatch errors
  • Default installation path no longer points to the Orion directory
  • Patch Manager Admin Console no longer generates alerts
  • Patch Manager logs are now stored at %ProgramData%\Solarwinds\Logs\PM\.

For information about installing Patch Manager, see the Patch Manager Installation Guide.

Before you upgrade

If you are upgrading from a previous version, be aware of the following considerations:

  • Make sure your server complies with the Patch Manager 2.1.4 system requirements.
  • When upgrading to Patch Manager 2.1.4, if you added a site binding to a host name before you upgrade, you must bind the Orion Web Console to a fully qualified domain name (FQDN). See this article.
  • When upgrading to Patch Manager 2.1.4 with custom menus, you cannot see the Performance Dashboard link in the menu. For details, see this article.
  • After integrated Patch Manager 2.1.4, future releases will no longer support Windows OS 2008 and 2008 R2 and Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 for Orion Platform installations. Integrated Patch Manager 2.1.4 currently supports these versions. SolarWinds recommends that you upgrade to Windows Server 2012, 2012 R2, or 2016 at your earliest convenience. For more information, see End of life notices.
  • Always use the Product Upgrade Advisor to build your upgrade path.
  • If you have written your own code, such as changing SolarWinds .css files or adding .js files, it may be overwritten with the upgrade. You can learn more about custom code in this article.

How to upgrade

If you are upgrading from a previous version, use the following resources to plan and implement your upgrade:

  • You can upgrade from SolarWinds Patch Manager 2.1 to the latest version. See the Patch Manager Upgrade Guide for instructions. This guide includes detailed information to help you plan, complete, and troubleshoot your upgrade.
  • Use the Product Upgrade Advisor to determine your upgrade path. Based on your current environment and versions, the Product Upgrade Advisor provides an ordered list of how to proceed with the upgrade.
  • When you are ready, download the upgrade package from the SolarWinds Customer Portal.
