New features and improvements in NCM
NCM 8.0 offers new features and improvements compared to previous releases of NCM.
Network Insight for Palo Alto firewalls
Detailed policy information
NCM provides detailed information about the policies defined for your Palo Alto firewalls. The Policy Detail view displays information about the policy definition, recent changes to the policy, and other firewalls using the policy. It also lists the addresses, applications, and services that the policy includes. If NCM is deployed with NTA, the Top XX Conversations on Policy widget shows application traffic conversations that are affected by the selected policy.
Interface config snippet
When you access the Interface Details page for an interface on a Palo Alto device, the Interface Config widget displays the interface configuration snippet for the selected interface. This widget is available when NCM is deployed with NPM.
Improved configuration comparison interface
When you manually compare configuration files, the Compare Configs of Selected Nodes page includes the following improvements:
To help you quickly identify changes, the page displays only the mismatched lines and the lines immediately surrounding them.
For context, NCM displays up to five unchanged lines (by default) before and after each difference. You can change this default in Config Settings.
- Mismatched lines are highlighted in light yellow, and the characters that changed are highlighted in darker yellow.
Click the link before or after each group of lines to display more unchanged lines.
These changes apply only to the Compare Configs of Selected Nodes page. The Change Report and the Baseline Diff page have not changed.

Improved performance for NCM config download jobs
Increased scalability and parallel processing improves the performance of config download jobs. The performance improvements are especially noticeable in large deployments with multiple polling engines.
Descriptions of errors that occur during config download jobs are written to the NCM business layer log. This log is located in
Support for Windows Server 2019 and Azure SQL Database
NCM 8.0 adds support for the following to align with other Orion Platform 2019.2 products:

|Orion database SQL Server version||
Azure SQL Database
New features and improvements in Orion Platform
The Orion Platform 2019.2 offers new features and improvements compared to previous releases of the Orion Platform.
New customer installation
For information about installing Network Configuration Manager, see the SolarWinds Orion Installer.
Before you upgrade!
If you are upgrading from a previous version, be aware of the following:
When you upgrade to NCM 8.0, all NCM job logs will be migrated to a new storage location in the Orion database. Be aware that the Configuration Wizard might take additional time to complete because of the job log migration. The amount of time required depends on the number of logs.
This change will improve job performance and enable you to filter the job logs to make troubleshooting easier.
How to upgrade
If you are upgrading from NCM 7.5 or later:
Use the SolarWinds Orion Installer to simultaneously upgrade one or more Orion Platform products on your main Orion server.
If your scalability engines (additional polling engines, additional web servers, and high availability servers) are able to communicate with the main server, use the centralized upgrade feature to upgrade the rest of your Orion deployment in parallel.
For details, see Install or upgrade Orion Platform products.
With NCM 8.0 and later, you can upgrade your entire Orion deployment, including the main server and all Orion Platform products, from the My Orion Deployment page. Downloading the Orion Installer for future upgrades is no longer necessary.
If you are upgrading from NCM 7.4 or earlier, use this topic to plan and implement an upgrade to the current version of NCM.
