Effective December 31, 2021, Mobile Admin has reached its end of life and is no longer available or supported. If you liked Mobile Admin, consider trying another SolarWinds product.

Rove Monitor in Mobile Admin

Detection

The detection method for Rove Monitor is the presence of the Windows Management Instrumentation service.

Authentication

You may authenticate with Rove Monitor using Mobile Admin login credentials or alternate credentials specified after a Change Credentials action has been taken.

Communication method

The communication method is Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI), Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP), and Transmission Control Protocol (TCP).

About Rove Monitor

Rove Monitor is a simple up/down monitor that allows you to create Mobile Admin Dashboard Feeds that send Notifications when various system performance metrics cross configured thresholds. For example: you can receive a notification when the memory usage on a server becomes greater than 80% or when the ping response time from a network routing device is greater than 10 minutes. Rove Monitor performs the system metric checks directly from the Mobile Admin Server. No other monitoring system support is required.

Rove Monitor

All the procedures in this chapter assume that you are logged into Mobile Admin and that you have selected the Monitor service displayed by a server or selected the Monitor service from the Manage Services list.

Selecting the Rove Monitor icon displays the monitor screen that allows for Windows Performance monitoring on Microsoft Windows platforms, and for Ping Response monitoring for all network devices.

When a system metric crosses the user defined Alert Threshold level, a notification is delivered. A red notification is delivered when the metric equals or exceeds the Alert Threshold level. A green notification is delivered when the metric is below the alert level. All Rove Monitor notifications contain a colour; the date and time of the alert; the name of the server being monitored; the metric name; the measured level for the metric; and the Alert Threshold level. Highlighting a notifications and selecting "Manage" will display the corresponding Rove Monitor screen with current metric levels and feed settings.

Windows performance

  1. From the Rove Monitor screen associated with the selected server, select Windows Performance. A screen will display the various thresholds and settings you can manage.
  2. A text input field allows you to set alert threshold levels for system metrics.

A metric is included in the dashboard monitoring process by selecting "Include 'the metric' in Feed".

  3. The "Alert Trip Count" text field is used to prevent false alerts due to transient jumps in a measured performance metric (e.g. a short term spike in CPU usage). The alert trip count is the number of consecutive measurements that must be true before an alert is generated.
  4. Select "Add to Dashboard Feeds" if you have created a new feed, or "Save Feed Settings" to save changes to an existing feed.

If an error occurs when measuring a metric, then an error message is displayed instead of the current metric value. A notification will show the metric level as "Unavailable".

Ping response

To set up and manage ping responses:

  1. Select Ping Response from the Rove Monitor screen associated with the selected server.
  2. A text input field allows you to set alert threshold levels for the ping response time.
  3. The Alert Trip Count field allows you to specify how many consecutive measurements must be taken before an alert is generated. This reduces false alerts and ensures that your notifications are legitimate. ICMP Echo Request Packets used to gather the ping response time originate from the Mobile Admin Server. The Mobile Admin Server will wait 15 seconds for the corresponding ICMP echo reply before timing out. The alert trip count is the number of consecutive measurements that must be true before an alert is generated.
  4. Select "Add to Dashboard Feeds" if you have created a new feed, or "Save Feed Settings" to save changes to an existing feed.

If an error is encountered during the process of measuring the ping response time, then the error message is displayed instead of the current ping response time value. A notification will show the ping response time as "Unavailable".

Services states

To receive notifications of service states:

  1. From the Mobile Admin home screen, select Manage Services and then select a host, or select Manage Hosts, select a host to manage, and view the services associated with that host.
  2. Select a service for which you wish to view the running state or that you wish to receive notifications about.
  3. If the service chosen is one that allows for notifications to be sent, you will see an option to Subscribe to this feed... in the menu.
  4. When prompted, name the feed, add additional information is desired, and save the changes.

Web servers

  1. From the Mobile Admin home screen, select Notifications, and select Subscribe to and manage feeds....
  2. Select Subscribe to a new feed..., and select Website Uptime Monitor from the list.
  3. Enter a Website address and select Subscribe to This Feed. Provide optional feed information if desired and select Save. If the Website is responding with an HTTP status code of 400 or 402 and above, you will be sent a notification.

Email servers

  1. From the Mobile Admin home screen, select Notifications, and select Subscribe to and manage feeds....
  2. Select Subscribe to a new feed..., and select Email Monitor from the list.
  3. Enter a hostname or IP for the Email server and select an Email protocol.
  4. Select Subscribe to This Feed. Provide optional feed information if desired and select Save. If the Email server is not responding with the correct ready status then you will receive a notification.
