Create a SmartGroup

SmartGroups are dynamic groups that include content determined by a filter you create. Unlike regular groups that include static content, SmartGroup content automatically keeps track of changes in your network.

The following example explains how to create a SmartGroup that contains all devices manufactured by Cisco Systems.

  1. In the toolbar, click Devices.
  2. In the Groups menu, click My Network.
  3. Click the Add drop-down menu and select Add New SmartGroup.

  4. In the Name field, enter a name for this group.

    For example:

    All Cisco Devices

  5. Click the SmartGroup contains drop-down menu and select Devices.
  6. Click the Start With drop-down menu and select No Devices.
  7. Under SmartGroup filter rules, add a rule that compares the device vendor property of each device.

Click the drop-down menus and select Add devices, where status is down.

  8. Click Add New Rule.
  9. Click the drop-down menus and select Add devices, where tag is.

  10. Use the Regex Wizard to create a regular expression for the Matches regular expression field that matches the case-sensitive string Cisco.
    1. Click Add Regular Expression.
    2. Click Regex Wizard.

    3. Under Step 1 in the Match begins with field, enter Cisco.

    4. Leave the Step 2 field blank.
    5. Under Step 3 in the Match ends with field, enter Cisco.

    6. Scroll down to The Regular Express you have built: field.

    7. Copy the text in the field, and then click Close.
    8. Paste the text into the Matches regular expression field.

    9. Click OK.

The new group displays in the My Network window.
