Track click coordinates in the WPM Recorder with X, Y Capture Mode

Click here to learn about the two types of recorders supported by WPM 2020.2.

You can use X, Y Capture Mode to track coordinate clicks during a recording. When this mode is enabled, WPM mode simulates mouse actions at the operating system level and also records all keyboard actions. All mouse actions are converted from global coordinates to local browser coordinates and displayed in the Recorded Steps pane, as shown in this example:

Because WPM receives no feedback about whether a mouse action succeeds, X, Y Capture Mode is typically used in conjunction with the following tools:

  • Image Match (for example, to verify that expected images loaded)
  • Text validation (to verify that text is present on a loaded page)

You can use X, Y Capture mode to force the webview (the area of a web page to be captured) in the WPM Player to scroll to a location where a regular action will be executed. If you add a step that captures the position of the horizontal and vertical scrollbars, WPM adjusts the webview area automatically when transactions created from the recording are played back. This can be helpful when you can only interact with elements when they become visible to the user.

Note the following details about X,Y Capture Mode:

  • X,Y Capture Mode is only available while recording a sequence.
  • The X,Y Capture Mode tool turns blue when the mode is active.
  • To exit X,Y Capture mode, stop recording, click another tool, or perform another action such as importing a file. You can also click the X, Y Capture mode icon to turn it off.
  • If you know a page element such as a button will not appear immediately, add wait time or Image Match before capturing a click to support successful playback.
  • See also Capture coordinates in iFrames.

To use X,Y Capture mode:

  1. Launch the WPM Recorder:
    1. Type a URL.
    2. Set the screen resolution.
    3. Click Start Recording.
  2. Click the X, Y Capture mode icon.
  3. Click somewhere on the page as needed.
  4. Click Stop to end the recording.
  5. Click Play and verify that the recorded clicks and actions appear in the Recorded Steps pane.

To use X,Y Capture mode with Image Match:

  1. Start the recording.
  2. Click Add Image Validation and then drag your mouse over a region of the image.
  3. Click the X,Y Capture Mode tool to enable it.
  4. Click somewhere on the page as needed.
  5. Click Stop to end the recording.
  6. Click Play and verify that the recorded clicks and actions appear in the Recorded Steps pane.

To simulate "Image match with click" functionality available in the Deprecated WPM Recorder, add an action to validate the image before using the X, Y Capture mode action to click in the center of the image.

If you encounter issues, see Troubleshoot X,Y Capture Mode.

Capture coordinates in iFrames

Capturing coordinates in inline frames (iFrames) is not directly supported because iFrame elements have their own scroll bars. As a workaround, use the iFrame scroll bar to scroll up/down or left/right, and then use X,Y clicks to select the background of a page. Avoid capturing elements like buttons or text inputs.

By default, WPM does not allow X,Y clicks inside an iFrame from a different domain than the parent web application. To override that setting:

  1. Navigate to the following default folder: C:\Program Files (x86)\SolarWinds\Orion\SEUM\Recorder.
  2. Open the following file in a text editor: WPM Recorder.exe.config.
  3. Scroll to the following line: <disableWebSecurity value="false" />
  4. Change "false" to "true".
  5. Save your changes and restart the WPM Recorder.
