New features and improvements in SCM

SCM 2020.2 offers new features and improvements compared to previous releases of SCM. You can also compare this release with previous releases of SCM.

Monitor databases for changes

Connect to your database and execute queries to watch for changes to objects, user permissions, available resources, and the configuration of backups and jobs.

Make use of new out-of-the-box database profiles

Get the most out of SCM by using the following out-of-the-box profiles to monitor essential changes in your databases:

  • MS SQL Server Essentials
  • PostgreSQL Essentials
  • MySQL Essentials

Assign credentials to elements

Assign credentials to elements when polling Files, Registries, Scripts, and Database elements.

Take advantage of improvements to the Content Comparison page

You can now quickly select previous version of your content with version picker, easily view aggregated changes, and copy or download previous versions of content.

Watch for changes to file attributes

SCM now collects file attributes for the files you are monitoring so that you can watch for changes to file permissions, ownership, and other attributes.

New customer installation

For information about installing SCM, review system requirements and use the SolarWinds Orion Installer, which you can download from the SolarWinds Customer Portal. After installation, use the SCM Getting Started Guide and the SCM Administrator Guide to learn about configuring and using SCM.

How to upgrade

With SCM 1.2 and later, you can upgrade your entire Orion deployment, including the main server and all Orion Platform products, from the My Orion Deployment page. Downloading the Orion Installer for future upgrades is no longer necessary.

If you are upgrading from SCM versions earlier than SCM 1.2, use the following procedure:
  1. Use the SolarWinds Orion Installer to simultaneously upgrade one or more Orion Platform products on your main Orion server.
  2. If your scalability engines (additional polling engines, additional web servers, and high availability servers) are able to communicate with the main server, use the centralized upgrade feature to upgrade the rest of your Orion deployment in parallel. For details, see Install or upgrade Orion Platform products.

Known issues

Asset inventory does not display operating system information for Linux
Issue: When viewing asset inventory, Linux operating system information is not shown.
Resolution/Work-around: None

Importing profiles using the Copy of function uses invalid credentials

Issue: After importing a profile as a copy, the profile displays with pre-filled elements. When assigned to a node, all of the elements display an invalid credentials issue.

Resolution/Work-around: None

Warranty data does not appear after Asset Inventory polling of HPE Proliant servers
Issue: Recent changes to HP Warranty servers interrupt periodic polling.
Resolution/Work-around: None. Click here for details.

Warranty data does not appear after Asset Inventory polling of Dell servers
Issue: Recent changes to Dell Warranty servers interrupt periodic polling.
Resolution/Work-around: None. Click here for details.

SCM plugin not responding in specific cases when custom credentials do not exist on a node
Issue: A user has a profile that contains a registry element with a custom credentials set and later creates an additional custom Windows registry, file, parsed file, or PowerShell script element of any type. The user then monitors both the original and additional elements on a Windows node. If the credentials set for the original registry element do not exist on the node, that element does not correctly display the error "Invalid credentials." No changes are detected by SCM on the additional custom element.
Resolution/Work-around: None
